  1. I recall seeing that type of ominous sky in the Midwest which made us nervously look at the ragged cloud bottoms for indications of a funnel cloud beginning to develop.
  2. The first-generation 1955-'57 Ford Thunderbirds were purely a competitive response to the challenge presented by the Chevrolet Corvette. It was secondarily a vanity project for Ford Motor company management to challenge GM on every model front. The two-seat configuration was a given as both cars sought to appeal to growing interest in imported sports cars from MG TC to Jaguar XK. The clean styling was consistent with the overall design idiom of the cars in that class. In Ford's case, they presented essentially a sectioned, reproportioned 'custom' version of the full-sized 1955-'56 Ford styling to gain the visually associated sales advantage in the showroom. But the two-seater market was a volume limited one, Ford was going public with its first stock offering in 1956, thereafter no loss-leaders were going to be carried for long. While personal/luxury concept was perceived as a potential growth segment, expanding passenger capacity to four widened the appeal to a broader market and greater sales volume...and per-unit profits. By mid-1955 the decision to pursue that market had been made, styling was mandated to develop a 'sporty' personal/luxury design that would appeal to an upmarket clientele which in the tenor of the times had moved beyond clean and purposeful, embracing "Jet-Age" glamorous. The market spoke, verified the four-seat decision and styling were correct, rewarded Ford with 37K+ 1958 sales, came close to doubling down for 1959: 67K+ and clinched it with 92K+ for 1960. Thunderbird's success caused GM to take the market segment seriously, developing first the stopgap Oldsmobile Starfire then the Buick Riviera, Oldsmobile Toronado, FWD Cadillac Eldorado, plus popular-priced segment Pontiac Grand Prix and Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
  3. Here is a better look: I'd opine it is a 1914 Studebaker Six Model EB, though don't have a reference that shows that odd rear hub.

  10. A bit of irony in this image is the bodies for both the Cord and the 1938-'39 Studebaker convertible sedan in the background were built by the Central Manufacturing Division of Auburn Automobile Company. After Cord production ended in August 1937, AAC took contracts with various other manufacturers to produce car and truck bodies as well as metal kitchen cabinets. Studebaker management decided to add the four-door convertible sedan styles to the 1938 Commander and President selection. As was typical for many volume production automakers that included convertibles in their model offerings, for low volume, labor-intensive convertible styles, a separate department handled the body construction either from basic stamping or by modifying body shells. Unique trim, upholstery and top installation was also performed by that separate department before the bodies were routed into the normal assembly line cue.

  16. The original owner of this Rolls-Royce took the appeal to economy seriously of purchasing a higher-quality car in spite of the higher initial cost because it would be functional and longer-lived than less-expensive cars, ergo fewer times needing to trade for a new car. This idea shows up in many of the quality luxury car advertising of the period. Not mentioned was the rapidly changing industry-wide styling which would quickly render a ten-year-old car obsolete looking. The gentleman must have loved this Rolls-Royce to bypass the custom Pierce-Arrow purchase in preference to updating the Rolls-Royce. They did a nice job of updating the styling, though removing the lower beltline plus adding a wider one above the door handles would have been details that would have help a more modern look. A 5-degree rake to the A-pillar-windshield was another.

  23. "Double-Dater" was the cutesy term Studebaker began applying to their Champion coupes with a full-width fixed rear seat for five passengers beginning in 1941. This same coupe body without either fixed rear seats ("Double-Dater") or the fold-down occasional seat (OS) was the three-passenger Business Coupes. Seems as if the "Double-Dater" should have been called a four-passenger coupe...
