  3. ‘Anyone missing a tank?’: Nebraska State Patrol discovers military vehicle parked on the I-80 ramp after being abandoned by a trucking company following training exercise in California Nebraska State Patrol found the vehicle on Thursday on the I-80 near Overton The bridge-building vehicle belonged to the South Dakota National Guard It was returning from a training exercise in California when it was abandoned Officers in Nebraska have uncovered who the owners are of an armoured vehicle that was found abandoned on the side of the road. Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) came across the abandoned vehicle, which looks somewhat like a tank, yesterday morning at around 11.15am, according to KLKNTV. The vehicle, found abandoned off the I-80 near Overton, Nebraska, had markings on it identifying it as belonging to the South Dakota National Guard. The tank-like vehicle had been left on top of a trailer by the company contracted to transport it. In a statement, Highway Patrol said: 'The trailer was abandoned sometime yesterday by the driver of a trucking company contracted to move the vehicle for the Guard.' NSP were able to work out that the vehicle, which despite looking like a tank is actually used to help lay bridges, belongs to the South Dakota National Guard 211th Engineer Company. It had been involved in a training exercise in California and was on its way back to South Dakota when it was left by the side of the road. Despite being discovered yesterday, it is believed that the vehicle had been abandoned on Wednesday. The state patrol and South Dakota National Guard are now working together to return the bridge-laying vehicle and locate the driver who abandoned it. So far officers have not been able to contact the truck driver responsible for transporting the vehicle.
  4. The world's first electric Rolls-Royce: UK firm to build battery-powered vintage Phantoms with a range of 300 miles, £500,000 price tag and on-board BAR SERVICE Silverstone-based classic car conversion firm Lunaz will modify 30 vintage Rolls-Royces into electric vehicles Just 30 will be produced, with the option of 1960s Phantom Vs and various versions of the Silver Cloud The Phantoms will cost £500,000, which is six times the value of a pristine example of the original car Each will have a 120kWh battery pack installed - enough for the cars to be driven 300 miles on a full charge The interior is also fully upgraded with sat-nav, air-con, television screens, USB ports and on-board WiFi Rolls-Royce bosses have already said it will be producing only electric cars by 2040, but the iconic British brand has been beaten to the punch by a small UK firm that is converting 30 of its beautiful vintage models into zero-emission vehicles. Lunaz, which specialises in ripping petrol engines out of classic cars and replacing them with batteries and electric motors, has today announced the availability of vintage Phantoms and Silver Clouds that produce no exhaust pollution whatsoever. Just 30 examples are due to be built at its headquarters in Silverstone, all of which will have ranges in excess of 300 miles on a full charge and their own on-board bar service. And they won't be cheap. Prices start from £350,000 for the Silver Cloud examples and the Phantoms are half a million pounds, That not only means these suave - and silent - recreations are six seven times pricier than a standard sixties Roller, but also pricier than the current Phantom VIII built at Goodwood. Lunaz isn't new to the scene of repurposing vintage cars to make them zero emissions, ULEZ compliant and quieter than an ant in slippers. The Northamptonshire conversion specialists have been doing the same to classic Jaguars and Bentleys for some years. 'The time is right for an electric Rolls-Royce,' says its founder, David Lorenz. 'We are answering the need to marry beautiful classic design with the usability, reliability and sustainability of an electric powertrain. 'More than ever we are meeting demand for clean-air expressions of the most beautiful and luxurious cars in history. We are proud to make a classic Rolls-Royce relevant to a new generation.' The first of the 30 models to have their 6.2-litre V8 engines dissected and replaced with a green powertain has been completed - and looks incredible. Each car will be stripped back to the base metal, 3D-scanned, weighed and then fully restored before the eight-cylinder lump and the remaining drivetrain is ripped out. In its place will be a massive 120kWh battery pack. The UK firm says this should be good enough for a range of 300 miles and more. Performance figures and charging times haven't yet been revealed to the mere mortals who could never afford a Roller in the first place, but it should be capable of taking rapid charging, with the port located on the driver's-side rear wing. A convetional socket looks like it is under a separate cover on the opposite wing. And while on the outside it might look like a debonair limo lifted from the sixties and dropped into a world of electrified motorcycles, cars like Teslas and even scooters, from the inside it will fit seamlessly into 2020. That's because the period cabin will be modernised with the inclusion of sat-nav, onboard WiFi, a full infotainment system, USB charge ports and air-conditioning - though Lunaz says this will all be 'sensitively integrated' into the car's original woodwork. There are current-era treats for those in the back - with the Phantom able to carry up to eight people at a time - with stunning leather-covered chairs, rose-gold inlays, two televisions, a privacy screen dividing them from the driver and a full bar service complete with finely-crafted decanters. The brakes, suspension, steering and entire electronics will also be upgraded to ensure it goes, stops and rides like a modern vehicle - and without breaking down each time you take it out. Priced at £500,000, each will be almost £150,000 more expensive than a brand new - though entirely standard and bespoke-option-free - Phantom VIII. And with classic car insurer Hagerty valuing a 'concours' example of a 1961 Phantom V at between £76,900 and £138,600, you're certainly paying a premium to go emissions free and avoid London's Congestion Zone and ULEZ daily charges. If your budget doesn't quite stretch that far, some of the 30 examples Lunaz creates will also be Silver Clouds from the same era, which ring in at a slightly cheaper £350,000. That's still a very big chunk of cash for a classic Silver Cloud. Hagerty says a 1961 Sliver Cloud II - in incredibly good condition - would today cost around £58,500, which is six times less than Lunaz's electric version. The Silver Cloud's cheaper price will partly be down to them having a slightly lower battery spec than the one in the Phantom - an 80kWh pack - but the same projected range on a full charge in excess of 300 miles. Customers can choose either a fixed-head and drop-head version of the Silver Cloud I, II and III models - all of which will be sourced by Lunaz and meticulously converted. Commenting on the creation of the electrified classic cars, Jen Holloway, design director at Lunaz, said: 'My approach to design is defined by Sir Henry Royce’s philosophy that ‘small things make perfection and perfection is no small thing’. 'Together with our clients we work to create relevant expressions of the most significant cars in history. 'I am proud to give new purpose to some of the most beautiful objects ever created.'

  6. My friend had a BA - British American converted to GULF full service gasoline station in the early 1970's It had high end cliental from the Ford Motor Company in Oakville, Canada. The Truck and Car Assembly Plants. They kept saying self service stations would never catch on because all those rich executives and their wives would never pump their own gas. I wonder if they were right ?
  7. I learned the other day when a Canadian Reo Member mentioned a Blind Mechanic owned a 1922 Reo Touring car. I understand the Perkins School for the Blind was teaching Automotive skills to blind people in Watertown, Massachusetts founded in 1829 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ycab1jQ37OI Eric Davidson was a beautiful, fair-haired toddler when the Halifax Explosion struck, killing almost 2,000 people and seriously injuring thousands of others. Eric lost both eyes--a tragedy that his mother never fully recovered from. Eric, however, was positive and energetic. He also developed a fascination with cars and how they worked, and he later decided, against all likelihood, to become a mechanic. Assisted by his brothers who read to him from manuals, he worked hard, passed examinations, and carved out a decades-long career. Once the subject of a National Film Board documentary.

  9. Overview For the most well-heeled among us, the average run-of-the-mill supercar may fall short of fulfilling our needs. If transportation with a six-figure price isn't exclusive enough for your tastes, there's the 2020 Bugatti Chiron. The Chiron costs almost $3 million, and it's about as exotic as hypercars get. With fluid curves and angrily squinting headlights, this coupe's exterior design communicates power and performance, and its standard 1500-hp engine endows it with acceleration capabilities worthy of a bullet train. The Chiron's cabin is deluxe, but storage space is minimal, and amenities such as driver-assistance technology and an infotainment screen are missing. While this Bugatti may not be the most accommodating choice for something as mundane as a daily commute, it excels as a head-turning lust object and all-around performance machine.
  10. The $3MILLION supercar smash: Bugatti Chiron and Porsche 911 crash as BOTH drivers try to overtake slow-moving motorhome at same time on Swiss Alps road The Chiron and the Porsche collided before the Porsche hit the Mercedes-Benz Then the Bugatti hit the motorhome and the Porsche sustained the most damage No one lost their lives but the Mercedes driver was rushed to hospital for injuries The Bugatti Chiron (pictured) busted its grille, front bumper and hood. A brand new Chiron is worth $3million brand new The Porsche sustained the most damage in the accident and the Mercedes driver was rushed to hospital but no one was killed

  14. So do you adjust your mirrors L & R to also take in the view out the rear side windows to also act as side view mirrors? Or just to the rear ? I’d like to believe one was convex and one was concave to give the driver two views aft. Unfortunately, I’ve been forced to accept that the mirror to the right is actually a vanity mirror for the lady passenger seated next to the driver!
  15. Short video 3 1/2 minutes Shows old cars in it Mercedes Adrienne Ramona Manuela Jellinek (September 16, 1889 – February 23, 1929) was the daughter of Austrian automobile entrepreneur Emil Jellinek and his first wife Rachel Goggmann Cenrobert. She was born in Vienna.[1] She is best known for her father having Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft's line of Mercedes cars named after her, beginning with the Mercedes 35 HP model of 1901.[2] In addition, her father hung a large picture of her at the 1902 Paris Automobile exhibition. He even legally changed his name to Jellinek-Mercedes in 1903[3] after Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft registered Mercedes as a trademark in 1902.[4] Her name is a Spanish Christian name meaning mercy.[5] Mercedes lived in Vienna, and had two failed marriages.[4] She had a magnificent wedding in 1909 in Nice, on the Côte d'Azur, with Baron von Schlosser. The couple lived in Vienna until World War I, which ruined them. They had two children; Elfriede (b. 1912) and Hans-Peter (b. 1916).[1] In 1918, Mercedes was begging for food in the streets. A little later, leaving her husband and two children, she married Baron Rudolf von Weigl, a talented but poor sculptor. She played music and had a good soprano voice, but never shared her father's passion for automobiles. She died in Vienna from bone cancer in 1929, at the age of 39, and was buried in Vienna in the family grave near her grandfather, the former chief rabbi of Vienna, Adolf Jellinek.[6][7] In 1926, Daimler company merged with Benz company. Although the company traded as Daimler-Benz, it gave the name Mercedes-Benz to its cars to preserve the respected Mercedes marque.
