Oh boy Check with some of the antiquers from your local climate for viscosity but DO USE SOME WITH ZDDP I live in the SE US a hotter climate and use Valvoline VR1 Racing oil 20/50 in my 27 Commander with the Big 6. Others may use another brand that works But WITH THE ZDDP. A lot of info on this subject here. Good luck Commander Dave
  2. Best penetrating stuff I've found is 1 part acetone and 1part Auto Trans fluid, and have tried a bunch. Be careful; it could be hard on paint. Commander Dave

  9. I've looked in vain in my records and the Review how to decipher the engine production dates. This is for my 27 Commander. On the block is g-8-31. the engine # is37565. Any assistance would be greatly welcomed. This time I'll write it down in a couple of places. Sincerely; Commander Dave

  11. George; Thanks, The tank I have is 5.5 inches across the top and what appears to be "25 g" on model #. the 25g is stamped a little high on the raised up area and my reading is most likely right. Don't know if it helps but patent date is 2/14/1911. p.s. camera is broken, will have to get a new one soon.
  12. On my 27 commander's vacuum tank where the gas inlet goes into the tank has snapped off. I've already epoxied it once and now need a new top section, new tank, or go to an electric fuel pump. We have a local show coming up May 2, so time is of the essence . Anybody have a Stewart vacuum tank out there or can you recommend a good electric fuel pump? Sincerely ; Commander Dave
  13. George; Thank you for the invite to ride with you on the first tour, but Tom Lewis said that the 1'ST tour is on Monday and will not be able to make it because of having to work on Monday. Again, Thank you very much. Commander Dave

  16. Thank you carb king! Now I have to figure out what carb might be best without breaking my bank account. I kinda thought that might be the case because she wanted to go but couldn't get enough juice. Respectfully ; Commander Dave
  17. I remember some time back of talk about the bb1 carburetor. Are there any experts who think my bb1-d carburetor might be to small for my 1927 Commander "Big 6" 354 cid engine?
  18. Susan Bowser, wife of David Bowser, of Huntsville, Al. passed away Friday Nov. 8 after a long illness of c.o.p.d. She was a member of both SDC and the ASC. She was a registered nurse who graduated with honors and worked as a charge nurse at a local hospital. She then went to work as a home health care nurse. She had been unable to work for several years because of a back injury and copd. When she was able, she really enjoyed our times with sdc and liked looking at the Antique Studebaker Review. She got to ride in our 27 Commander a few times and really liked that. 19. carbking; maybe what I'm experiencing is the carb running out of air. Never thought about that. Also, it looks like this carb might be to small for this engine. Any idea what might be good on the Big six? Commander Dave
  20. Hi all, I have a BB -1 on my 1927 Studebaker Commander with Big Six engine. 354 cid. Had it rebuilt about 5 years ago and is good. Curious about the metering adjustment screw. Was told to turn out 3 times, but seem to have to fiddle with it time to time. Also, some times under full throttle it seems to starve for fuel and have to slow down for fuel to catch up. Line has been checked and has a recent float and seems to be set right. Could this engine be to big for this carb? Respectfully submitted ; Commander Dave
  21. Consider a Studebaker; Pretty reliable and great club to work with. Some of their cars were a little bigger than Ford or Chevys of that era. Yes, I am biased cause I have owned many Studes. but only have one now. A 1927 Studebaker Commander Sport Roadster. Now, don't the rest of you guys get me for plugging my preference. There a lot of good Brands out there. Respectfully, Commander Dave
  22. Should have been Mr. Beef Old Commander Dave. When I started school there weren't as many letters or numbers to learn and not nearly as much history to learn.
