  1. To spu, There are many out there who can run circles around me when it comes to working on cars but they have not answered you yet. I have a 27 Big Six and do not how similar it is to your 24/25 However my points are set at 20 and the plugs at 25. Does your car have the timing advance/retard lever on the steering wheel? I'm sure you have played with that when you accelerate, does it help any? Also on mine I've had to fiddle with the carb. some too. But my Big 6 has a Carter bb1 carb. instead of the original. This is about all I can offer you because of my limited mechanical knowledge. These settings are what the book suggests for my car and they have worked the best so far. Would like to hear back if you have fixed the situation. Good luck. AND the bus looks really cool. Commander Dave
  2. John; doing your frame as Mr. Kapteyn suggests is o.k.....But; and here we go varying opinions.......if you want a nicer finish why don't you at least scrape, wire brush or sand off the worst parts. It all depends on how nice you want it to look. If you sandblast you still need to sand it. I have used POR 15 on the inside areas of my roadster that are not seen. I brushed it on , but if it were used on an area that is seen, then it would be sprayed. I know that there are a lot of other ways to do this. Sandblasting is messy and will get into places you never thought of. You can give me a call, as we are both in the N. Al.Chapter. Also, listen to other opinions on the forum as there will be a lot of good ones. Good luck, Commander Dave
  3. Studerex; Thank you VERY much for the clear golf bag door wood work photos. Mine do look like that. I have the framing around the body panel, it's the framing on the door it's self where I messed up. Tried making frame without knowing what it looked like. I can see the angle cut into frame where the hinges fit. Please excuse me but I don't have e-mail. Could I bother you for the thickness of the frame and angle of cut for the hinges? Again; your photos helped a lot. Sincerely; Commander Dave of Huntsville, Al.
  4. To Studeboy; there are many "mysteries" out there to keep us guessing. I'm guessing that there were inconsistencies at any one factory paint shop. I do not doubt you a bit when you say that your Dictator had an engine side firewall painted black. But think about it like this; On those early year cars, most likely the cowl was always painted off the car and then fitted to the car. To have then painted the engine side of the firewall black would be a separate operation, costing time and money. Maybe this was done;but why? As for me,when it's time to paint my 27 Commander it will most likely be painted body color. Sincerely; Commander Dave
  5. I know this Site is for the A.S.C. But the North Al Chapter of S.D.C. is having another orphan show this year benefiting the local meals on wheels program in beautiful, historic Huntsville. I plan to have my "under construction" 27 comm. sport roadster there and we even had a 42 Commander there. If you know anybody in this area please contact them. Sat. April 19th 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. 256 426 2261 or 256 746 5025thanks
  6. To Gary B; I may be using the incorrect term for what I mean. But here goes; This is for a roadster with rumble seat. Pass. side, to the rear of the passenger door , near the bottom of that panel is a door large enough to slide in a golf bag and clubs. The bag and clubs then sit on the floor in back of the seat and protrude a little into the rumble seat area floor. This is what I call a "golf bag door", but this may not be the correct term. This small door also has wood framing and closes onto more wood framing. This is what I've been working on with frustrating results. I hope this explains ,rather than confuses. Roadster Dave
  7. to studeboy from commander dave; your door is ,as far as I can tell is different. Mine hinges on the front side and is not completely square. But, thank very much for your your effort!
  8. For my 27 ewj; Still working on wood frame on golf bag door! If any one could post a picture of theirs it would be a big help. Otherwise I'm hanging in there like a rusty fish hook
  9. On my 27 comm. roadster , does anyone know if the hinges for the doors fit the golf bag door? I've been trying to make a frame for the door and fit hinges to it where it will open and close. I am not a wood worker [but have enjoyed the learning process]. But just can't seem to get all the angles right, almost opens, but no cigar. Does any one out there have a couple of pictures or pattern you could post? Thank you one and all. Commander Dave
  10. Mr. Munts used to advertise In the Review .I heard that he was ill but does anyone have any info? Also, has anyone taken over his business? I dealt with him once and was very informative.
  11. To oldford; I bumbled through and found your PM. Thank you; commander dave
  12. To oldford; Thank you for your reply. Please excuse me, but I have not been able to figure out how to receive PM. I assume that means private message? Also, I do not have e-mail. Is there any other way we can communicate? I've looked in the ASC roster but came up short there too.
  13. I have a 27 commander of course with the big 6. The fan it's self is attached firmly to the pulley but the whole thing has a fair amount of wobble. It doesn't seem to while it's running. It has been lubed. Is there any way to tighten this without it being a big deal? Thank you, Commander Dave
  14. Thank you dictator27 Checked for ball bearing and it's there. will leave adjustment alone because the old car steers pretty well for it's age. Thanks to everyone on forum for your help. Commander dave / From warm Alabama , where 2 nights ago it was 5 degrees!
  15. Thank you all. I am embarrassed to say that I don't know how to put a picture on the computer. So I'll find out and post one. Thank you very much
  16. Thank you batwing eight. However, after just looking at steering box again all I can see are 2 grease fittings. But on the back side there is a 9/16 bolt, which I removed and it was on a larger nut that came off with it. Is it possible that this is the fill hole or is it for adjustment to the worm gear? I do have a parts manual and the service book and they are not clear at all about anywhere to add lube. Looking forward to hearing from you. Sincerely; Commander Dave
  17. On my 27 comm. big six roadster on the steering box there's a grease fitting. Please tell me about it. Also, what's best for the grease cups on the dist. shaft and fan? these may sound like dumb questions, but it's better than making a stupid mistake. Sincerely, Commander Dave
  18. Commander Dave here; Sun. Oct 13, Here in Huntsville, Al. Maple Hill Cemetery held it's annual cemetery stroll. local volunteers portray one of the full time residents dressed In period correct clothing. Donations are taken to clean and repair the historical part of the cemetery. I portray Mr. Russell Erskine and have a display board with some photos of him and of course Studebakers of that period. This takes place in front of his mausoleum. I want to be as authentic as possible. What I need are clear photos of him. (reproductions of course) This is a historical charity event ,any of our props and costumes come out of our own pocket. As an aside note; I had the chance to talk to the head of the cemetery and mentioned that someone had said the roof of the mausoleum was in bad shape. She assured me that as far as she knows that it's O.K. and that there were going to be inspections this coming year. Hopefully his will be one of them. If you wish to contact me.would you use the forum. I've got a new computer and do not have e/mail set uo yet Thank you; Commander Dave
  19. From Commander dave; I got mine I think last Sat. Thanks Rick, it was great.
  20. Are the Reviews late? the mail ; or am I just impatient?
  21. Studeq; Yes it LOOKS close. I have the cover picture also. Having said that, close is only close in the eye of the beholder. My Stude. reference library list Elton green only on comm. roadsters. Also I've said that matches my car . I have to match colors every day and even within the same color code there are sometimes many color variances. Wanted to see mentioned roadster but was on loan. Be glad to send you color spray-out. Want to help others if possible. Sincerely; Commander Dave
  22. I have a paint formula that matches Elton green. Have been a professional auto painter for over 40 years and am still working. I've got a 27 comm. sport roadster that had some of the original paint in the rumble seat opening lip. Also on bracket that golf bag door hinges attach to. We have a [colar map] at work , did a spray -out and it matches very ,very well. Please contact me with a phone # .My computer runs in spits and spurts. My # 256 426 2261 or davidjames1949 @comcast.net.
  23. On my 27 comm. roadster big 6 I too was having trouble shifting and upon the advice of a couple of car guys I switched to 30 wt in the trans. I am not an expert on this subject ,Howeverit didn't take me long to figure out that this was not the way to go. somewhere in turning wheels or the antique studebaker Review it was suggest to use: NAPA mineral gear oil SAE 90 api gl 1. Instant improvement! Also, remember these old cars shifted out of first gear at only a few mph. To second let engine idle way down and same for third. Mine dosen't shift perfectly but better than before. This worked for me.but no guarantee it will for you. Good luck . Commander Dave
  24. :cool:Interesting: I was born in DuBois Pa. 1949 Now living in Alabama and working on 27 Commander Sport Roadster. Commander Dave
