  1. Thanks guys; have ordered Hirsch sealer have used por 15 on inside panels good stuff.
  2. Have removed the gas tank on my 27 Commander and has scale in it. Has anybody had experience with Bill Hirsch tank sealer? What would you suggest. Tank does not have holes in it but scale and crud. Used a tank sealer years ago in my 66 GMC truck but can't remember if any sealer came loose or not. Thanks Commander Dave
  3. Changed plugs yesterday they were very sooty Engine burns oil,,Carb good. Carter BB1 BUT the carb warmer has nothing but the rod thru the housing no way to adjust except with vise grips (a couple of years ago it took me a few weeks of penetrating fluid and using vice grips) to free it up. I don't need the warmer working. Question; Would I turn that rod "up" or "down" to make it right. Also, if that thing is in the wrong position could it do that to my plugs?   4. Thank's Stude light; I noticed that on the bottle picture it had Extreme Pressure on it. After remembering many conversations on the forum concerning lubes I decided to stay from Extreme pressure stuff. Now, please don't stone me! I had used Royal Purple suited for gl4 or 5. Being that I had some it's what I used. I do not know if the steering box has any yellow metal in it but decided to treat it like it did. The front wheels were off the floor and I dropped a little in the hole and turned the wheel back and forth and repeated a bunch of times, but I was doing other stuff too. Maybe just in my mind but it seemed like they turned a little easier. Next is lubing the chassis. Thank you all for sharing your Knowledge. PS Took the 27 for a ride to Taco Bell a while ago and the kids working there came out. One asked me if it was a Jaguar,,then asked if 27 was about the first year for cars. But at least they showed interest. Went on to the parts store and a dad was showing his young son the car when I came out. Let the boy sit in it, and he liked that. You see, I'm not showing off my car; I'm just sharing it.
  5. Grimy; Yes, I have the old style grease gun and will remove a fitting and add differential grease suitable for use that has (yellow). metals

  7. Time to give my 27 Commander a good lube job. There are zerk fittings on the steering box and a few years ago I used grease for the suspension to lube and now think that wasn't the right stuff to use. Didn't know any better. What do you guys use for a steering box that old?
  8. Praise the Lord! As you know, I've been trying to re-pack the nut for the water pump shaft on my 27 Commander for a while now with out any success, but today I decided to give it 1 more try and if it worked, great, if not; well, I was considering a couple of other choices, none that I liked. Grimey sent me some packing material that could be pulled apart to use a smaller diameter and after more fiddling around I added 1 small strand and the nut went on without much effort and after adding water it leaked very little. After running a while and tightening the nut it is doing good! Just got back from a test drive and every thing still looks good. A great big thank you to all who helped out ! Commander Dave

Quite a job for me, I got to looking at the repair manual and realized it may be biting off more than I can chew considering recent back surgery so I will try to find someone to hire. But I still need to find a good or new shaft. So' I ad a new request to the forum. Does anybody know where I can get a water pump shaft for a 1927 Big six?. Respectfully Commander Dave.
  11. Thanks for all the help. Got the 27 outside this afternoon and saw and felt a groove in the shaft. I've contacted Rick but now am wondering about how to replace it. Any one out there done this? Thanks Commander Dave
  12. Stude Light; Do you have any contact info for Restoration Supply? It wouldn't hurt for me to try 1 size smaller packing rope before getting another shaft. Thanks
  13. Should have realized earlier, but there's a bit easier access to everything after removing the coil and plate holding it. Tired again but still pretty much. have the same results Will try once more now that it's a little easier to do, but will have to wait because the high temp. here today is 23 with a low tonight of 5 tonight. Not as cold as some of you though, but this is North Alabama and the garage is not heated. I've e- mailed Rick Peterson about a shaft in case I need it, but his e- mail keeps getting kicked back. Any other source for s shaft?
  14. Good ideas guys, will try again. Did not think about wrapping it around a dowel.....Then pull out dowel and wrap the packing around shaft. The packing should look like a coil...Will try after resting back. Very thankful for the help.
  15. Fussed a bit with the water pump packing and think the new is a bit to big; checked against the old that I removed and have taken into account the old was compressed ,but still looks like the new is a bit to big. New stuff is1/8th but where can I find more new stuff?
  16. Re-checked the packing I removed against the new packing and old looks a bit smaller. New is 1/8th
  17. Good suggestions all. Yes, all the old packing is out. Thanks, guys. Will try again this week end. To Grimy; many years ago wife, me and buddy went looking for a Stude. Lark, but found a P.A. Travelodge instead and the owner had tools feed & other junk stored in it. Never found the owner. Have kicked myself for not following up on it. I remember very fey details about it.
  18. I've been trying to pack the nut for the water pump shaft on my Big 6 on my Commander. Did this years ago without any trouble, but now after 4 or 5 try's it still leaks. The shaft has Very little of a groove . Don't think it's enough to cause a good leak. Due to recent spinal fusion my work periods are short and more distressing. How many times should it take around the shaft to seal? I've crammed as much of the rope in the nut as I could but couldn't get nut started and have used different lengths, even shorter ones. I am hoping I've just made a simple error. Just in case; how hard a job to replace the shaft? Thanks Commander Dave

  20. So now all of a sudden we don't need to use oil with zddp. What about all the pictures of destroyed parts? So, flat tappet engines can use regular oil ? I think I'll keep using oil with zddp because next youse guys might say to use the stuff. Who the heck do we believe. Sounds like the government saying certain foods are to be avoided and next they say they should be eaten in mass quantities. Come on now!

  23. Correction to my post on engine color. The green would be after 28.
  24. Color; Something you could consider Battleship Grey solid but I would rule out any metallic. Not Exactly sure When the grey started but a semi-educated guess would be late 28 or 29. Remember the old Bell Telephone green? Close to that ,and they were told to match 30 weight oil. Good luck. Commander Dave; 1927 Commander Roadster with the engine grey.
