  1. To studerex; thanks man , makes me feel like I'm home. When I learn to post a picture I'll do one of my roadster if you'll do one of yours. Now where did I leave my camera? Do you remember? Happy new Year. Commander Dave
  2. OK guys. I'm an idiot. So after posting about the spring not being there and having another block, at 10pm I goes out to the garage and check the old block and low and behold, there's a spring in there. What luck! So I go to the engine in my roadster and pull the plug for the oil preasure relief spring .......... and there's one in there too! I do not know what I was thinking when the thread was started about not having a spring in there. Any way, thanks to all. I suppose there could be a million excuses for this but that's how it went. George, you know me and know how I am. Think I'd better go to bed before I hurt myself. Egg on Face Commander Dave
  3. To rbk and all Excuse me. this is for the "big six" 354 engine. George; I think I have an extra block somewhere and will check for one on it. Never thought about it being installed backwards. Don't see how but will check anyhow. Is there any way any of that could be lost inside the engine when I try to get the ball out? Thanks, Commander Dave.
  4. First thing I did was to check the "search" area but came up with O results. My manual shows a spring between the bolt and ball. Is this correct? So a while back I remove the bolt to see if it's clean and there's no spring. Is this right? What the heck? I see the check ball, but no spring. In hot weather ,at idle the preasure drops to just 3 to 5 lbs. Not to good . When first starting it's usually around 35. Can someone out there educate or just call me stooped. Commander Dave

  6. Have been looking at the old fighter pilot scull caps on line and after reading reviews decided most of them are junk.Have seen pictures of guys wearing them in the Review. Would anybody chime in where you can get them without spending a lot? Would like one and goggles when I drive my roadster with the windshield folded down. Commander Dave

  9. Hello all. My 27 Commander roadster big 6 has always had cutch chatter, but the other day it seemed to get worse. I've looked at my repair manual but it isn't all that clear. How hard a job are we talking about here? I don't want to mess something up by trying to [fix it] or by driving it that way to much. Any suggestions? Thanks to all.
  10. I have seen 2 different kinds of the Atalanta mascots. In the March/April 2004 Review on page 23 is an ad and picture of one for an Erskine. Mr.Olson has it for sale. Much more streamlined than the usual one's on 27 and 28's. I think a Mr. Mose designed the more winged one?..... Now to the new 2015 calendar by the S.N.M. Pictured is what I'm reasonably sure is a later model of 27 Commander roadster on the 1st page. Later because of style of cowl and head lights. It looks every bit like mine. Now; in this picture the radiator mascot is the type that Mr. Olson advertised for the Erskine. Why this mascot on this car {adorned by the nice looking Zigfield Follies girls] instead of the other Atalanta? What type would be proper for my car, being a later 27? Would somebody shed some light and educate me? Commander Dave

  12. Is The Review late, or am I overly anxious? Don't think my membership has lapsed.
  13. to GE Dictator 1928; I use 90 wt mineral oil in my 27 Commander. Studeboy say's he is using 140 wt. and I might just try that since it's a little hard for me to go into 3rd without a little grind. This has been discussed here before, but would still like to hear from metal experts. And, it does take a different driving technique on our older cars. Commander Dave
  14. Don't think you can loose with this. A subscription to Hemmings Motor News or Hemmings Classic Car.
  15. Should read/ Why is it recommended we don't use anti freeze.
  16. Tell me, please. Why is it not recommended we don't use anti-freeze in our older cars, like my 27 Commander. And no, I haven't. Just curious. Commander Dave
  17. Concerning the original colors. I have a 27 roadster with Elton green paint. I am a car painter with over 45 yrs. experience. On my roadster I found a good nearly unblemished patch of color in the lip of the rumble seat opening. I have access to a [color map] at work and did a spray-out with formula. It matches MY car very well. I would like someone to have this if they will put in the clubs color library for others to use. I'll mail it to you. Also, I've finally gotten e-mail. My e-mail is davidjames1949@comcast.net Ph. 256 426 2261 Thank-you, Commander Dave
  18. rbk; How much on the temp gauge, so we'll all know. Thanks, Commander Dave
  19. Police cars; To Tex Riv 63 Concerning the Studebaker Sheriff special of the 20's. As far as I've been able to tell, there was very little different about the Sheriff spl. than the stock Big six Stude. They did have high speed rear ends and a 354 c.i.d.engine. B elieve me they have good torque and top speed. In 1927 the 2 Commander sedans and roadster set stock car records. In the 60's Studebakers were used as pursuit cars using the R-1 and I think some R-2 supercharged cars. I've presented off the top of my head and no mis-representation is intended.
  20. From Commander Dave; Changed oil in big 6 using Valvoline racing oil using 40wt. .Have noticed that in summertime and after about 10 or 15 miles the oil psi can drop to 15 lbs.or slightly lower while driving and less at idle. however, in moderate temps it stays around 25psi.It smokes and has a fair amount of [blow bye].I know it needs rings but is this oil pressure within normal range?
  21. Time to change oil in the big 6. I'll use Valvoline racing oil and want to use 40wt. Will it hurt to use some 30 or fifty wt. of same brand in with it?
  22. To Echo Robert; I have a 27 Studebaker Commander Roadster. But also portray Russell Erskine in Huntsville Al. In my research I've used google to check out 20's clothing styles and have found the following. In mens clothing; just google in what you want and you will find a LOt of Info on styles. So far I've gotten what I want at thrift stores. Note; double breasted suits then usually used 2 buttons to button of instead of like just 1 used today. For round spectacles go to Gentlemen's Emporiuem . For a male ,more casual look go with a long sleeve shirt, pleated, cuffed trousers ,suspenders and a fedora.almost all men wore hats and short sleeves were considered by some to be {lower class}. There are even sewing pattern sites for women. Do you belong to the Antique Studebaker Club or to the Studebaker Drivers Club?. Both great clubs. ph.256 426 2261
