The "Ivory Zeppelin" in profile; nice contrast don't you think?
  4. Oh... not at all what I expected, probably for the best.
  5. The back looks almost exactly like the '49 Veritas! http://www.carbuzz.com/news/2011/11/8/One-Off-BMW-Veritas-is-on-the-Auction-Block-7705653/
  6. I have never seen a German car that didn't look good in blue, excellent choice my friend! I wish mine was "quarzblau" but I'm keeping her original, if plain, white.
  7. Very useful, thank you. I will make a habit of checking for stress fractures. How can I find out if my '62 was fitted originally with Bias or Radials? My data card shows it came only with "Dunlop 7.25.13" but no mention otherwise. I know MB was advanced for their time in many ways, for example I don't need to use lead fuel additives because they already used hardened steel in the sleeves, so I'd be curious to know if it came with radials or alternatively if the wheels would be built to a tougher standard as a matter of course.
  8. Missed this in my reply, but same here, I was sending pics to a friend yesterday and my brain said "wow, I'd love to have one of those one day" since that's what it's been used to thinking for so many years, hard to retrain yourself, but a pleasure doing it. When I see it in the garage I still don't fully accept that I can get in it and drive away. Oh man, after this chat I think I need to go drive it right now!
  9. Haha, I totally understand. When I found my MB coupe it was sold out from under me the morning I was going to make payment, the buyer then missed his three-day window to complete payment so it became available to me again. I was there when the doors opened that morning! During the couple of weeks waiting for the title to arrive from the DMV (state transfer) I did not mention the car online or show it to anyone in the event the original owner changed his mind or some other fluke. Paranoid maybe, but better safe than sorry. I look forward to the reveal when you're totally "in the clear."
  10. Actually very true, it would make the deal easy if the right guy saw your post, didn't mean to rib ya on that, just offering advice to help you get into the car you wanted quicker. Congrats on your purchase, pics on another thread yet! Ready to run or does she need restored?
  11. Can someone clarify what are the potential issues with radials used on rims meant for bias ply?
  12. Really enjoyable thread, thank you for continuing to share your progress! Your father will no doubt be very happy to see this car returned to the road, assuming he no longer has any trepidations caused by his dream. I would suggest you have exorcised those demons by lavishing such love and attention on the car! Doug is a man after my own heart, it seems he can find a solution for any problem that may arise and probably looks forward to those challenges. I noticed on his site a sandblasted glass clock face, you may wish to pass along another method that he (or you) may be interested to try. Use a blank vinyl decal sheet that he can either print a digital template from his computer or draw on by hand as he did previously, and cut out the image using an x-acto knife. Then use a glass etching gel (gel and vinyl sold at many craft stores or online) that can be brushed on, usually in two opposing directions to eliminate lines or a "grain", and cleaned off after about 30-seconds each application. The result is finer lines, less depth of the cut lending to an overall more elegant finish than sand blasting.
  13. That's a very specific vehicle to a very specific owner for a very specific trade. I think you will do better selling it outright and putting that plus the cash you intended to make up any difference towards an outright purchase of the car you seek. I can see you waiting several lifetimes waiting for this deal to come together otherwise.
  14. I remember seeing Gordon Buehrig's personal car at the Hoosier Motor Muster in Muncie, Indiana (at the Minnetrista Cultural Center) sometime in the early to mid 1990's. Doing searches online only bring up the various cars he designed, but does anyone know what his personal car was or better yet, have photos? If memory serves, it was black, and the side windows and roof stand out in my memory as being unique maybe either an opera window or a special removable hardtop with unique fixtures, 95% sure it was a Cord, but I really cannot recall as I was fairly young then. I've thought of this car often since that time and would love to solve the mystery. Possibly similar to the Campbell's Soup Heiress car here, note the multi-position roof:
  15. Is this the same Bentley? I snapped these at "Allure of the Automobile" in Portland last summer.
  16. There are ways now to run an online store without costly merchant accounts like you needed even a few years ago. You can now use PayPal buttons that charge the same or close to what regular paypal transactions cost, you just add them next to the photo and description of the item you have for sale, make your own item numbers, you don't need a separate "store" account or specifically designed page. Here's a link to my artwork page where you can see exactly what I'm talking about. No, this isn't a subversive way to draw people in to my site, so please delete if this is inappropriate, but it demonstrates what I'm describing: MarrsCars.com No credit card company sign-up fees or that stuff, technology is making online selling cheaper and easier all the time. Good luck to whomever this helps. Edit: Oh yeah, I also use a very basic web design service called "website tonight" through GoDaddy which makes it even easier, you don't even need to know html (website programming code), and I built that entire site myself and do my own updates, I think I pay $5 a month. Long gone are the days of being suckered by merchant accounts.
  17. I watched both episodes from this auction, for motorcycles and cars, and last night I had a dream that I was wandering through an immense, cavernous compound with multi-levels, dozens of collectable cars, old carnival games, etc., that surely was inspired by what I saw on the show. Seems Mr. Hartung is still giving people great joy, even as we slumber.
  18. That's a lot of work for no responses! I love cars that still show their original patina but clean up well. I'd rather have that car than one that's been restored to 100-points, call me crazy. I think detail work is interesting, especially on high-end exotics or classic cars because you really get to spend time on them and by the end of the job, you know the cars (literally) inside and out, maybe even more so than the owners!
  19. For future members searching for info on the R107 series SL, this is the most common thing to check: R107 Timing Chain
  20. Did you end up buying one of these cars? That's an R129 chassis, a truly great car. Don't want to write a novel if you're no longer interested but let me know.
  21. This is extremely "iffy" and probably would get someone fired, but if you're on exceedingly good terms with a service adviser at a MB dealer they can look up the VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry) by VIN and it could show the whereabouts of the car if it has had any dealer servicing. That is not very likely, and you would have to not reveal to the owner how you got his info, so you can see this is a long shot at best.
  22. Please send me a private message with your want list. No guarantees on these cars of course but I will make some inquiries. Please include at least your general location.
  23. Love the new generation of car programming on TV. It used to only be "Motor Week" which I loved as a kid, but now, compared to Top Gear (UK), Chasing Classic Cars, and even Wheeler Dealer, it seems so outdated. We are living in a great age, primarily because with all the competition from literally hundreds of networks, there is such a need for original programming that allows these shows to even get made in the first place. Speaking of great representatives for the hobby, a big "thanks" to Steve_Mack_CT for cross posting on the Mercedes-Benz forums, otherwise I would have never joined up here. I have also introduced a couple of friends to the AACA forums. A truly enjoyable and informative resource and a great place to expand my automotive horizons and dream of that next acquisition! Hmmm, Avanti? Studebaker Silver Hawk? Another 1957 Cadillac like my first car was? No need for daydreaming, the '62 is keeping the wallet empty for the foreseeable future!
  24. I was shocked to learn that the Wounder Warrior car isn't really for the true charity we all think of when we hear that name. Did anyone else see this article on Jalopnik? Why Did The World’s Biggest Car Auction Raise Money For This Birther Scammer Of A Wounded Vet Charity?
