  1. This is by far the largest and coolest Brit event I have ever attended. 800 cars, literally impossible to see them all in one day, vintage races associated with the event, and thousands of like-minded folks attending. Labor Day weekend, you will never forget this show. All British Field Meet Portland Oregon Here's our post on the event from last year just for a small taste of what you are in for! Moto Arigato: All British Field Meet Makes Us Want to do Something Dirty with an E-Type Worth a trip from anywhere in the country!
  2. Exactly my thought, this probably is going/went straight to the metal recycler in your area or nearby town. If they are stealing scrap they usually are dumb enough to deal somewhat in the region where the items were stolen. It is possible it is still in one piece tho they may have cut it up, and it is possible it hasn't been scrapped yet if they are accumulating a truckload. As said, take pics, detailed description, measurements, anything you have and leave with local scrap/recyclers with a large notice saying "STOLEN" at the top of the page just so they are encouraged to stay honest. They likely have dealt with the same folks in the past, and I'm not sure the laws where you are but they may require ID from them when items were accepted in, so could have a record, or at least keep an eye out and call the cops when they show up next time. Good luck.
  3. (Jay, you may wish to resize that last photo as it affects loading time and layout of the thread) Tho not exactly hwat you asked for, on your return trip home or even better on a weekend getaway, try West Baden Springs Hotel near French Lick, Indiana. It's right in your area and if you haven't been since they restored the place... wow. I truly recommend it for anyone, not only in the region. It is truly a world-class hotel easily on par with places like the Hotel Bel Air, etc. http://www.frenchlick.com/hotels/westbaden I stayed there a few weeks after they reopened and while you can do a tour without staying, you should really get a room on the inner atrium side so you have balcony views all night long of that wonderful dome so perfectly lighted. While dining at their restaurant, we saw deer ambling in the woods just outside the window, reminded me of that Chevy Chase movie "Funny Farm", wondering if they had locals setting them loose just out of sight because it was so perfect and picturesque. The formal gardens and beautiful, the history of the place with it's former wooden race track is cool too. There's really not much to do in the town otherwise but you can golf or ride horses, visit the nearby French Lick hotel or gamble in the casino, but West Baden is where to stay and just relax. Indoor and outdoor pools, a lovely library, lay back and read in the atrium. As you can tell it really left an impression on me, and I recommend it to people even living out here in the West, it's just a special place and you are fortunate to have it so close by. Google it for more images and history, the website doesn't really tell the story well.
  4. Yes, the nose/cockpit has been off for some time, seems a slow restoration as money comes in. It hasn't been a gas station in a while but it would be cool if that was it's use again someday, the diner is still there tho. As to Wright houses, taste is certainly subjective but I have always found them charming and elegant, especially the Prairie style houses, but where they really shine to me is inside more than out. Just wonderful details and imagination. I even had an artisan design and build a custom table lamp in the Prairie style because of Wright's designs.
  5. I missed the ad but if it was a Bentley look-alike and the seller used their brand name in the ad or if the car had any "B" logos, Bentley probably filed a copyright claim to have it removed. You may remember the story of the Gullwing that was crushed by MB: Mercedes-Benz crushes ‘unlawlful’ Gullwing replica
  6. In the other thread I showed my hand but wanted to see some responses here first. I have offered tips when my guys have gone beyond the call of duty, taking me in without an appointment when I have unexpected trouble, seeing me right away when a repair didn't solve the issue, etc., but have always been refused. I then took to bringing in boxes of assorted high end pastries realizing they were probably accustomed to Krispy Kreme at best, and it has certainly gone over well. I do this now as a matter of practice and about every second or third visit, so for the extra $40 or so for a dozen and a half goodies I am in good graces with all the guys and gals at the shop it seems. I also make special effort for the shop girls to bring flowers as an exception. In truth, that wasn't my motivation, I truly wanted to reward these hard working folks, but I won't refuse the favor it has garnered. I see it as Karma at work, do a deed with pure intent and you will be rewarded accordingly. (Can you tell I'm from Oregon?)
  7. To be clear, I never said I'd actually *live* in one of his houses. lol They do perhaps look better on paper than in the flesh. Maybe he would have made a better artist than a designer. I do not disagree with most of your statements, I just appreciate his artistic mind which has no practical element, art is abstract in every form.
  8. Where is that yellow car located? When I was back in rural Indiana visiting relatives I was driving down an old favorite backroad, twisty, hills and valleys, very very rural area. As I round a dangerous slow curve what do I see parking in someone's drive? A yellow Sonnet, but I could only see it from the rear, heck surprised myself that I even knew what it was. There's also an Avanti that has been sitting in the same spot in a particular driveway for as long as I can remember. I love finding the oddest machines tucked away in unexpected places.
  9. BTW, I'm such a sucker for this kind of stuff, I think you should definitely keep that junk oil pump as a time capsule piece sitting on a shelf with the gasket facing out, it gives us a very personal glimpse into a pivotal era.
  10. Internet lingo, we'll bring you guys up to speed kicking and screaming if needed. "A win" = Cool idea, complete success, etc. "X2" = Times two, ie: multiplied because it's so awesome. In other words, Good show old chap!
  11. I do remember one Wright house in Pasadena always being covered in tarps for the common leaking roof, and of course some concrete crumbled, etc., but as an architect, where design is his primary face to the public, it is truly all about context. The innovative specially-patterned bricks, and to a lesser but to me more impressive note, the furniture he designed, all were light years ahead of his contemporaries. Like people who defame Warhol today, those who judge Wright in a harsh light tend to forget that before he did it, it simply hadn't been done before and the reason why it doesn't shock or amaze some of us today is because those designs and artworks have been appropriated so much since in popular culture that we don't even realize where it originated. On the topic at hand, I always loved this 76 station in Beverly Hills, around "Little" Santa Monica Blvd. and Crescent. I always bought gas down the road near the Farmer's Market since it was so much cheaper, but what a statement it makes.
  12. It's not always someone hoping for a novice buyer, I usually see this sort of thing coming from sellers who normally deal in other goods and think, "wow, old cars are worth lots of money so this wheel must be too!"
  13. So this was inspired by a thread I posted on another forum, but do you guys tip your mechanic? Only when he has a particularly involved job, never, sometimes, always?
  14. Great picture, great car, print a copy in B&W for her so it all looks "period correct" and I'm sure she will cherish it forever! Funny how they thought to make trunks even way back then fit a modern box of cupcakes.
  15. We have been in contact, always available for Benz chat!
  16. Some of you are familiar with this story, but here's an update explaining how the German courts decided to return the 500k back to it's German heirs. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-05-30/mercedes-car-stolen-in-war-belongs-to-heirs-court-says
  17. Peach Parts is maybe best for repair info, and you can also check BenzWorld forums for recommended repair shop subforum to find those in your area. They also have a 107 forum so I'd suggest joining both PeachParts and BenzWorld to get the best mix of advice from all parties, many members are on both, but some prefer one site to the other so you will still collect differing opinions and more specific advice.
  18. Dawn will also strip any wax still in place so you will need to re-wax that portion after.
  19. Images aren't showing, I think with Photobucket on this forum you need to copy the link that says Image Code, but you can go back in and edit your post and try each type using the "preview post" function until the correct one works and you can see the pics. I'd like to send this thread to a friend's father, we were just talking about these cars so if you get the pics to work I'll pass the link along. Good luck with your sale. Edit: I just noticed your other post has working pics. maybe you can click edit on that one and copy the full ad and report it here to be sure the photos work. Do you have the original wheels, grille, etc.?
  20. Also the service vehicle forum is lesser trafficked I'd imagine, maybe post a thread in the regular Chrysler forum, or even general with a link to this post? In that case Chrysler fans would remember an owner of similar cars and would be more likely to tell them about your post or direct them to it. Also, I'm sure in time your post will show up in internet searches so owners may filter in as they get curious from time to time and perform a new search on their cars.
  21. Had another conversation, this one non-verbal. Driving the other evening I noticed a lovely silver Rolls-Royce Corniche with it's top down approaching and just before passing the driver gave me a smile and wave which I returned. I think the Ivory Zeppelin has never been so blushed as she was to be noticed by such a fine car!
  22. A gentleman named Hugo90 on Flickr was kind enough to upload scans of the instructions for me in English, so I'm posting this for anyone else who may find this thread and need them. You can find them here: Prameta | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Prameta | Flickr - Photo Sharing! You can click the little magnifying glass icon at the top and then from the new page click on Fullscreen or Other Sizes at the top right to view in larger formats.
  23. I remember seeing those photos several years ago, they stick with me to this day even without the horror story!
  24. We don't have a formal date set for a get together but I will find as much info as possible when I do see him next and post to this thread. Some pains never go away, when his wife mentioned initially that he once had a Duesenberg I noted that familiar "I should have never let her go" sigh before he spoke. I just verified with my friend who was with me that the price was $1,200, but we could be off on the time frame. He may be thrilled to locate the car again, I would be.
