  1. Thanks for the pictures - some neat cars in the corral.
  2. That makes sense and is what I would expect. I'm less worried about what I judge (assuming I can do a good job) than about not getting "typecast" into a certain class of car.
  3. Interesting - a very different perspective on judging. Thanks!
  4. I'm thinking of starting to some judging with the AACA. I've purchased the current version of the judging guidelines (and read them). I've done a decent amount of judging Corvettes - with a completely different judging system, of course. A few questions: 1) How did you get started with judging? 2) How did you pick what you judge? I'm not sure I want to stay with just Corvettes, but I do know them best. 3) Are there judging classes that are easier to get in than others?
  5. We had a great time, though we made the rookie mistake of staying at the Hampton Inn and walking everywhere - we'll try to stay closer to the show field next year. As predicted by many, we both vastly enjoyed watching the cars coming in, though the lady was cold. Walking around the car corral warmed her up and convinced both of us that we need more garage space. We were disappointed by the flea market: something so vast should be more organized. I see other threads discussing the hows and whys of this issue - I'll tell vendors who are interested that we would have spent far more time in the flea market if the vendors actually interested in selling stuff had been more densely arrayed. We'll be back next year - thanks for all the advice given in this thread.
  6. Just jumping back in to this thread to thank everyone for their replies. We're a little short on vacation time this year, so we will be arriving some time on Friday afternoon. We expect to have a great time - my wife is especially interested in watching the cars enter the show field. I know this starts at 7:00 AM on Saturday - is there a specific place to watch from?
  7. Interesting and useful discussion. I do agree with the "if you bring a ton of stuff, the thing that breaks will be the one thing you didn't bring" crowd. For long trips with my (much newer than most in this thread) car, I bring a couple of multi-tools (one that tends more toward screwdrivers and one that tends more toward knives). A couple of appropriately sized wrenches and a wide (lord help me) Torx array go a long way toward fixing some issues. A set of fuses, motor oil, a serpentine belt, and a good portable air compressor complete the list. I'll be honest, though: most of my issues have either been solved with the AAA card or quick help over the internet.
  8. There's a class list in the 2011 Official Judging Guidelines, downloadable here: Judges Manual
  9. My wife and I will be attending Hershey for the first time this fall, probably late Friday and all day Saturday. We will not be bringing a car or seriously looking for parts. What advice would you give a Hershey newbie?
  10. Some of these cars do get restored - but it is almost always not a money-making proposition. They get restored because of personal reasons, where there is some other value to the owner other than a monetary one. I agree that parting it out might bring more of a return to you than restoring it and selling it. Signed, Someone into a car for way more money than it is worth
  11. Clever - one of those "wish I'd thought of that" things.
  12. Imagine the time and effort ... ... maybe not.
  13. A great read about bringing back a lovely car.
  14. I know of a couple cars where the buyer didn't even blink ... ... and the seller has much regret. This doesn't just happen with cars. I think it is better to just tell the potential buyer that the particular car in question is special to you. Most folks understand that.
  15. These things are getting better - if they can't do things that are useful to many of us right now, this might be different in ten years.
  16. Yes, but all hobbies are too expensive ...
  17. A question from a total newbie (member for a couple of years, but have never attended an event): Is there any charge just to attend Hershey? I understand that there are charges for showing a car, attending the banquet, etc.
