padgett
Until Dec 3rd, Sam's Club is having a $25 off sale on AGMs. I just bought a 34/78 (78DTAGM) with both top and side terminals for my 88 - $104.88 with exchange. That's a 2012 price.
KDirk
Thanks for the heads up. I just may avail myself of that offer since Optimas are now double that price typically.KDirk

padgett
I switched from Optimas to Duracell AGMs about four years ago. No problens so far. Drove a 76 GMC Motor Home (455 Olds) from Florida to Northern Arkasas on a Duracell GRP 31 when the alternator failed. Didn't notice the first day ("the ALT light has always been on..."). Then stopped in motel, charged at 15A until daybreak. Drive all day, do not shut down, repeat...
KDirk
Padgett, any idea who is making these for Duracell? O'Reilly auto parts has a house brand AGM that is made by two different outfits dependant on the region of the country they are distributed in. wws944
East Penn.East Penns batteries are also marketed under the Deka brand name. I have a couple of Deka AGM batteries (one in the Suburban, one in the 944). They have been fine. The cells are not cylindrical like Optimas, so they look like a conventional battery.A couple of years ago, my Reatta got a Delco so it wouldn't lose a point at Portland. Interestingly the 12v battery in my new Volt is a Delco AGM.
padgett
I always get a chuckle out of late 60s/early 70s GM cars with a repopped R59 battery. I was working for Deloc Remy at the time and spent a lot of time in the battery plant. New cars did not get an R- (or Y-) 59 on the assembly line.
