A lot of the ashtrays were small, but many were hooked up to the intake manifold of the automobile, so the ashes got sucked out and passed through the engine.  The butts would just get thrown out the window.

I have never heard of such a thing !!!  What cars used this feature?

I believe some of the earlier versions did go directly into the intake manifold.  I saw one on a car, but it was long ago and I can't remember the details, I'm talking in the 1960's on a 1930's car.....
