5219
Exxon was never AAA, but had its own competing motor club. The name Exxon only dates to about 1970. Before that, they were still Esso. That dates your sticker to the early seventies at the oldest.
ply33
According to the ExxonMobil website's corporate history page, they changed the name from Jersey Standard to Exxon in 1972. I know that the "put a tiger in your tank" ad campaign that was run by that company was done by the Enco stations in the 1960s before they standardized the corporate name across the whole country. I recall a number of gas companies having "travel clubs" or the equivalent with things like towing services, so it does not surprise me that Exxon did too. My guess is that Exxon window sticker is from the late 1960s at the earliest.
rocketraider
Exxon, Amoco and Texaco all had "motor clubs" and I'm sure other large oil companies had them. Great if you were close to one of their branded stations that had towing and repair service- a real "service station"- but if you weren't in area served by one, not so great. AAA is still the best bang for the buck because honestly, how many real "service stations" exist anymore?
Guest Gary Hearn
The change came in '72, I remember the political slogan from that year, "Nixxon, new name but the same old gas".
Dave@Moon
Exxon, Amoco and Texaco all had "motor clubs"...The Exxon (now ExxonMobil) Travel Club still exists. The name change took place in 1994. That sticker may not be very old at all, dating probably somewhere between the mid-1980s and 1994. (The current AAA reward is still $500.00).https://enrollanddrivetoday.com/Home/Partners/emtc?PromoCode=ECEMTChttp://www.bbb.org/houston/business-reviews/travel-agencies-and-bureaus/exxon-travel-club-in-houston-tx-30156/http://www.trademarkia.com/exxon-travel-club-74589401.html Edited July 22, 2014 by Dave@Moon added AAA note (see edit history)
Restorer32
In 1972-73 I worked in a factory that was making the frameworks for the new hanging EXXON signs to replace the old ESSOs. My job was to wipe down the metal frameworks and hang them on the moving paint line then pull them off the line after they came out of the paint oven. Hundreds and hundreds of 4' by 6' frames. Hated that job.
