thanks to all the help that i recieved here and elsewhere, we finally got the 1919 buick running, and it sounds great, the clutch plate was stuck so fixed that and took it for a short spin down the road was so exciting, a few more issues still need to be resolved though and wondered if anyone had any suggestions. I put fuel in the black canister near the carb, and can get it started, sometimes it starts right away other times have fits getting it started, the gold knob on the dash, which has hot, cold, choke is stuck, wont turn i assume because it is stuck in the carb, but i can pull it towards me, engine will run till the fuel in the cannister is gone and it gets no fuel from the actual gas tank, have checked the fuel lines from the gas tank to the cannister and know no fuel is coming from the tank because i put a clear in line filter in, any suggestions, thank you in advance, mark

Check the vacuum line to the vacuum tank to see if you have vacuum. Pull the tube from the gas tank and check to see that if there is a screen on the tube, that it is clean. Put a small piece of newspaper against the vent from the vacuum tank to see if it holds when you let it go. If it holds by itself, your problem is probably in the valves of the vacuum tank. One valve is not seating and blocking out the vent line so there is no vacuum in the tank.

With the top off the tank, you can block various openings and suck or blow on on other openings to see if the valves work. A piece of vacuum hose helps.

You can lap the valves with grey polishing compound or even tooth past.

Fred is offering some good advice here. If you still have no gas after Fred's suggestions, check the operation of the float itself. Rust and varnish from old stale gasoline can make the float stick. It must cycle up and down smoothly.

Don't be afraid to get into the guts and figure out how it works so you can identify the problem and fix it. The first vacuum tank I ever re-worked was on a 24 Buick truck at the BCA national last summer. Others could not believe that I would try fixing something that I had never had apart before, but I did it because that is all part of the fun.

In my 1918 buick, we freed up -the carburetor control which rotates -clockwise to Choke- counterclockwise back to Hot then Cold. I can copy you the pages from my 1918 manual if you want. As to the fuel problem- the advice you received sofar looks good. Good luck. Lou

Look the inside canister over and be sure it does not have any pin holes rusted though it. This is another common problem. Dave!
