fatboy
OK....well i finally figured out why my car is cranking up then dying. Its the cam sensor. Anyone know where to get one and how much, and also how hard to put it in. Thanks.
Vincent Vega
Do a search on cam sensor. Much discussion already.
2seater
The cam sensor should not prevent the car from running. It can even be disconnected (I just tried it)and not radically effect the way it runs. It may not be as efficient at low speed or as smooth, but it should still run. The crank sensor would be more likely if it refuses to run, or even the fuel pump which you referred to earlier. jimustanguitar
My 90 needs a cam sensor and a crank sensor, I quoted them out at advance auto a few months, and if I remember correctly, I could replace both of them for around $100 total. Those parts are still available aftermarket though.

harry yarnell
What does 'cranking up and dieing' mean? and why do you believe it's the cam sensor? Sounds more like a CRANK sensor.
fatboy
i wish my sensor was 7.00. Mine was 24.00. But i figured out its not. We ran the codes and that came up. So we replaced it.
padgett
Which code came up ? A 34 could be wiring, sensor, or magnet (latter has a nasty habit of falling off). In any case a bad cam sensor should not prevent starting. OTOH a bad crank sensor may keep it from starting without setting any code. And on the gripping hand, the Ignition module provides all spark timing up to 350 rpm, then the ECM takes over.As I mentioned before, any competant GM mechanic should know how to troubleshoot a 3800, it is one of the most common engines around and there is nothing special about the one in the Reatta. bigrog
ok guys, do some research on the cam sensor here. It's not really the cam sensor that fails, it's the magnet pressed into the back of the timng gear that the cam sensor reads that falls out/deteriorates/breaks off. The 10 dollar sensor that is easy to get to is usually fine, but the 5 dollar magnet behind the timing gears takes a while to replace. Anyway, the cam sensor will not cause your stalling. If it's an immediate stall (sort of a twitchy death as opposed to abrupt, like when you shut the key off) after startup, suspect fuel pump electrical circuit. OK, Padgett summed it up quite well, as usual.
