Annual Grand National Meet, Cedar Rapids

Recommended Posts

Hi, folks...

Could anyone who attended the AGNM in Cedar Rapids give us the scoop on the show?

Howdy, Wayne...thanks for posting the photos.

After most meets, there are usually some folks that post, but, so far, not in the AGNM's case. I'm certain someone will get back soon.

Regards, Peter J

Wayne ~ That looks like the Lewis Jenkins restoration of a VERRRY rare '42 Buick ROADMASTER convertible. What makes the restoration of a car like that so expensive is that virtually no body parts are interchangable with anything else. If you need a piece of trim and the person who has it wants $2000, you pay it. Ask John Myer what is involved in restoring a car like that. He did a '42 Buick SUPER convertible a number of years ago. It was beautiful, but it took a long time and no doubt set him back a couple of bucks. I know of nobody who does Buicks better than Lewis Jenkins and that kind of quality costs money. ~ hvs

It was a long drive back to Va from Cedar Rapids, with a few stops of course, but I can tell you the AGN was a superb event. I don't know what the final vehicle count was (my guess is around 300) but obviously from Wayne's pics you can see there were some fantastic vehicles there. I too fell in love with that Rickenbacker. The Cedar Rapids folks did their usual fantastic job of attending to every detail. The beautiful grassy showfield with plenty of shade trees was right across the street from the host hotel, but they still had a nice air conditioned shuttle bus running constantly. It was a very hot day-someone told me 100+ heat index (thankfully they told me after the show!) The Cedar Rapids folks were everywhere passing out cold bottled water. The food was fantastic and the Friday night entertainment was some of the best I've ever seen at a meet. Frank Sinatra reincarnated was especially convincing! Jack Harville and the entire crew deserve a big thanks for making the AGN the special kind of event it is supposed to be through their superb organization, and wonderfully friendly hospitality. I'm ready to go back to Cedar Rapdis again - and I believe there is a chance coming up. It is my understanding they are going to host a near future Founders Tour. No doubt it will be a great one!!!

See you all at Hershey-

Terry

I agree with everything Terry said about the quality of this Meet. Actually I wrote it all first, but for some reason the post didn't go through! Maybe I was too sleepy to punch all of the buttons. Wayne doesn't have all his facts straight, but it's not important to correct them here I don't think. He may be "close enough for government work." I too have heard we will be getting an application for the 2005 Founders Tour, and I can't wait to go. I love it out West, and to a boy from Arlington, VA "out west" is somewhere west of W.VA, right?

Hey Earl, Iowa ain't out west. Oh that's right, to you guys from VA, that IS the West.

Anyway it will be nice to have a Founders Tour reasonably close to home [Wyoming], for a change, since for us anything under 1000 miles away is close. I was beginning to think that all the tours were being held in Pennsylvania.

The Grand National was great!! Being from eastern Iowa this was a treat for us to help prompt AACA!!! Many thanks to all you guys that brought your cars!!

The Rickenbacker was my favorite too, and for those of you interested the owner stated he's thinking of selling or trading it for another project. If you'd like more details contact me at salt@lcom.net and enjoy my website dedicated to the Rickenbacker Motor Company at http://www.dreamwater.org/rickenbacker/

At the website make sure you take the FREE Rickenbacker Factory Tour; I've got an in at the factory so all fellow AACA members are free!!! ENJOY
