Tranny problem started tonight. On E-way can off ramp that had little upgrade at about 50mph transmission started shifting back and forth. this was in overdrive. Went to D position and kicked passing gear in and every thing was ok. Just when in overdrive approching hill or incline start giving more gas transmission starts jerking.

Any food for thought on this problem? Please don't tell me time for a rebuild.

Just started reading 89 service manual states poss it could be the modulator causing rough shifting when in overdrive? Any suggestions.

Does it actually shift into and out of lockup? Do the rpms change when this happens? An engine misfire will be much more evident when under heavy load and the converter locked up, which can be caused by many things, such as plugs, wires, coil pack, ignition module etc...

I have never seen a trans shift in and out of lockup without a change in rpm (usually jumps about 500 rpm). Sounds to me like a secondary ignition misfire - bad coil will feel like it is bucking and most likely on a hill around 1500 rpm (50 mph).

Lemme second Padgett's analysis, a failing coil pack feels like transmission problem, manifests its self under light to moderate loads at those speeds, sorta kinda, like what a manual transmission feels like when its lugging, intermxed with smooth moments where it feels like the transmission has found the appropriate gear. It won't set any codes either. Will cost you under 100 bucks, and take 10 minutes to change out even if you lack merchanical skills.

Definately worth doing.

Padgett thanks for your information. You hit the nail on the head regarding what it feels like. Today checked the RPM's while the shutter started, and the RPM's did not increase.

Spoke to my transmission tech, and he also stated it prob the coil pack also.

Thanks everyone for the information. Change the coil-pack this week-end.

If anyone has a good GM # for the coil pack hit me back with the number.

This for a 1989 Reatta.

There have been a number of people who have used Jacob's High performance coil packs:

As recommended by EDBSO:

Jacobs JAC-321412 Ultra Coil Pack $82.69. From Summit Racing 1-800-230-3030

Alternatively, ANY auto parts store you walk into should have in stock a the "standard" coil pack, as it was used extensively on GM's myriad of vehicles that carried the 3800 engine.

Third that - would also get Jacobs coilpack for "C" engine. Still have plans to find out if a "L" or S/C coilpack and ESC module will interchange, just have not scared one up yet.

Also like AC Rapidfire plugs gapped at .040".

I had the same problem that was solved with a new coil pack. Before I changed the coil pack I would manually shift from 3rd to 4th and that also solved the problem.
