Robert G. Smits
Looking for a replacement winch and notice that about 50% use composite rope rather than cable. Any thoughts appreciated Edited July 2 by Robert G. Smits Spelling (see edit history)
kar3516
I own four steel cable winches on various trailers and recently bought a fifth, my first composite cable winch. The main advantage to me seems to be that it doesn’t tend to lock up cable in a lower wrap when it passes through a wrap not spooled exactly correct. This has happened to me several times with steel cable winches. I took the precaution of buying a winch rated at 50% more pull than I will ever need…

Thanks The same winch style (long drum) with the same rating I bought will be more than sufficient. I am still using the same winch. Jim
Swear57
Rope winches are fine for dry climate but when they get wet or packed with snow & mud they don't want to unwind. A steel cable you can use a pry bar or even heat them up. I have both and they have their place.

Robert G. Smits
I ended up purchasing a 9000 lb with steel cable. Found one on sale for $200 less than a similar synthetic cable. Thanks again for the replies.
