Craig Balzer Posted June 6 Share Posted June 6 (edited) This area looks pretty simple so I thought I'd start there. Not much wiring to be seen . . . Still - I have two wires kickin' my butt Red = Power to Lighter Black = Ground but to where?? (this wire is sorta hiding behind the ash tray lamp assembly) and the Ash Tray Light made an appearance for the first time in decades . . . . . . but how to change the bulb and how to affix it to tray The red wire is too easy. That black (ground) wire doesn't seem to have a home. Any Body? The Ash Tray bulb was dangling behind the dash. How the hell do you get the bulb out? How the hell does it attach to the ash tray (or the panel in which the ash tray sits)? That wire is pretty short / / / / / / The entire ash tray and the stuff that holds it in place pivot back and down when you open the lid. With such a short wire, the lamp simply can't "ride" along - can it? There doesn't appear to be any attaching points on the front The holes in the lower corners are for attaching hardware The large opening in the center is obviously for the cigar lighter / There similarly is no where to attach the ash tray lamp assembly. The small hex head bolts (either side of and about 2" lateral to the back of the cigar lighter) hold the ash tray mounting bracket to the panel (BUT - I did find the tab for the grounding wire - it is face-on (nearly invisible) at 1 o'clock to the backside of the cigar lighter. YEAH me!!) So it boils down to just figuring out where the ash tray lamp assembly fits in the grand scheme of things. 1965rivgs Posted June 7 Share Posted June 7 The "wings" of the shroud that snaps over the ashtray light socket index into two slots above the ashtray. There are very small holes in the ashtray itself that allow the light from the bulb to filter through and illuminate the inside of the ashtray. Riviera63 Posted June 7 Share Posted June 7 The hood that covers the bulb pushes off of the base of the bulb socket so that you can remove the bulb. This colorized, laminated wiring diagram may be of help for these wiring questions and future questions. Riviera63 Posted June 7 Share Posted June 7 Here are some more pictures if that helps. 1963 stuff but, same idea. The little flanges on the hood surrounding the bulb fit into the slots on the side of the cigarette lighter receptacle. There is a hole in the receptacle so that light shines forward into the receptacle and a hole in the back of the hood so that light shines through the little holes in the ashtray. You can see there is a terminal on the side of the lighter receptacle for the ground wire. The base that holds the bulb slips into the hood. Shoulda known better. (I'm not familiar as I need to be with the chassis manual.) Going back with new knowledge, I finally found the little bugger of a lamp on 10-77 showing it related to the lighter. I overlooked it initially cuz the ash tray depicted here didn't match the Riviera's. And I was looking for an attaching point on the ash tray - not the lighter. Go figure.
