Same idea, just lay it against the spark plug wire.  I have the second one and it works great.

Cool tool! Can never have enough tools...

 

I have one of the Lisles. Embarrassed to say I can't remember last time I used it☺️.

 

I think there's an inline spark checker around here somewhere too. Can't remember last time I used it either!

Thanks for posting this. I've had one for years that didn't work and just couldn't throw it away. When I saw your post I dug it out and decided to see why it didn't work. The metal cap unscrews and inside I found old rusty steel wool packing holding in a broken bulb. I just got a cheap modern tester on eBay and was able to break it apart and tranfer that bulb to my old tester. It's not as bright as yours but it is functional again due to your post.
