Hi I am having an issue with the carb on a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 290 A Cabriolet where it seems to be consistently over fuelling. Does anyone sell parts/have info on these carbs. Its a Solex 35 s

To much pressure in the fuel line !!Where is the gas tank ?

Here is my experience:

Too much fuel pressure (maybe should have a 1lb or 1.5lb as baseline to start from and adjust from there.

Needle annd/or seat is worn

Float is wrong weight via or repairs or leakage

Improper float height adjustment to properly shut off fuel

After this, then adjustment (and I have seen people drill out jets and such over time - causing issues)

Hi John and Alsancle,

Thank you both very much for your replies.

Everything is pointing towards some dodgey repairs on the carbs. Would either of you happen to know the correct jet size or spec that these carbs should be for this engine?

What seems strange to me is the bottom half of the carb looks a very different colour to the top. Also the letters don’t quite match, but I can’t find much info on these carbs online.

Yop, something’s definitely mixed up here….🙂

The 1936 Mercedes 290 (M18) originally used a German Solex 35 BFV or 35 BFVL carburetor („L“ stands for „links“ (left) - mounted on the left side of the engine (bowl pointing towards the driving direction and „V“ stands for vertikal (vertical) - updraft carburetor). So it’s a German Solex BF-type updraft carburetor for left side engine mounting. Except for the bowl, which carries the main metering jet and air bleed, the carburetor appears to be original. It says „Deutsche Vergaser GmbH“ on it (German Carburetor LTD). But the bowl came off of a French Solex side draft carburetor 35 HBFG („H“ stands for horizontal - side draft carburetor and „G“ stands for „gauche“ (left). So the bowl is from a French Solex BF-type side draft carburetor for left side engine mounting. Both the German and French carburetors may have used the same bowls. I will have to look it up.

You could also use a Solex 35 VAFG carburetor as a replacement (Solex AF-type carburetor, vertical (V) and left (G) side mounting).

The venturi size on the Mercedes 35 BFVL should be 28,5 mm (you‘ll find the size numbers on the venturi e.g. 35-28.5). Main metering jet size 137,5 or 140. Main Discharge Jet No. 51. Idle Jet size 0,55 mm.

I can gladly help you out with parts in case calibration is incorrect. Just check all jet sizes including air bleeds, venturi size, needle valve size and float weight etc. and let me know what you need. I also noticed that the float depressing pin is missing.

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for all this information. I really appreciate it!

The carb on this car sits on the right hand side, in front of the passenger would that make any difference?

Would you know where I could get the correct bowl or parts for this Carb by any chance?

Many thanks

You‘re right, it‘s a 35 BFV, which is mounted on the right side of the engine (I didn’t notice the air horn on the side of the carburetor. So definitely a RH application).
The HBFG carb bowl is a „Montage 20“ bowl and should work on a BFV carb, although BFV, BFVL, BFVR, VAFD and VAFG carbs used the older style „Montage 12“ bowls. I can gladly check if I have a 35-40 „Montage 12“ bowl in stock. I also have jets, nozzles, fuel needle valves, venturies and floats etc. In stock. Just let me know what you need.
