Where/how do you store your collection?

Always an issue as we all know.

We bought a house on a one acre lot 30 years ago, one car garage, I figured no problem, theres a piece of my property across driveway perfect for a garage.  Then I found out covenants were three car max garage, attached to house.  Built a three car garage, wrapped around side of house were one car garage was, cheated on dimensions so it can hold six cars.

Meanwhile, was searching for storage for the company I worked for, there was an old VDO plant purchased by a local warehouse company.  I mentioned to fellow I was dealing with how all that square footage had me drooling, he said why don’t you rent the garage out back, we don’t want a business there.  Told him I knew his rates, I couldn’t afford the 1200 square foot building, he said no, $100 a month.  Wow, can I park my trailer there too?  That would be $130 a month.

Which is what I’ve been paying for over a decade, lucky me….

How else do you/can you make this work

If it in your budget find property close by you can build 800-1000 sq ft 3 bay garage. Build it yourself. Have more than adequate security. I use electric heater fans in the winter and window shaker AC units for summer. Leave high enough ceiling to put in a lift. Put it at least 100 amp service.

Check your zoning regs and stay in the guidelines. Depending on where you live your zoning board and neighbors can take you to the poor house.

Is a tent legal in your backyard? It is a temporary structure. I bought a sea container and have it on a friends industrial lot.

I have a 2 car garage attached to my home for daily drivers. My 880 sq ft garage is 200 feet from back door on a heavily wooded lot. Family engineers and friends built the garage for not all that much. Free labor helps.

I have used just about every type of storage available, in the past 55+ years.  Always feeling there was a better way.

From dirt floor garages to heated ex-factory buildings.  I live in Pa and the weather and climate was always a concern; and this should be a first concern for you too.

We get very cold Winters and Damp Spring weather. The summers are very warm but only for a few months. So a heated environment is surely needed.

The current issue is availability of such buildings and cost of heating, cooling and dehumidifying; energy cost have gone through the rook, so to speak.

I own a large tract of land but if you have to buy now; it is sooo expensive.

And Don't forget the Taxes and local restrictions

Of course the cost of building materials has been rising for the past few years.

So,is building your own place, really a choice now?

There original fiber glass was always get wet and would not do . I ask for blue board polystyrene ,pushed up in to Tyvec type vapor barrier . Doing over would add creator fencing. Yes, In our location, as ArticiferTom, has done; we have to spend extra $$ and time to prepare the floor. Keeping that dampness from coming up into the garage is critical.

I'm a little late to the table on this thread, but I'll throw in my $0.02 anyways, as no one has touched on my method of storage.  JDuguid, I live about 20 miles due east and ~10-miles north of you in the middle of Cocoa Beach.  My barrier island lot's probably half the size of what you have in Viera, and 3 blocks from the ocean.  I own mainland property in Cocoa, but it's 26 miles away, and the county no longer permits garages to be built there without a house being built first...too many people were building garages and then moving into them, without ever building a house.  I have the nominal FL 2-car garage, but have 8 collector cars, 2 tow vehicles, and 5 motorcycles.  That's not counting my son's T-bucket which is on my back patio, and his TransAm which I am paying commercial storage for on north Merritt Island.  I solved my parking dilemma with enclosed trailers.  I replaced most my front lawn with walkway pavers, and parked 3 trailers on each edge of my lot.  (Yes, the Hi-Lo travel trailer has a car in it.)  I try to keep things somewhat organized, but still, it's kind of unsightly, but perfectly legal and in compliance with all zoning requirements.  All of the trailers are licensed and locked, and all contain cars and/or motorcycles.  A couple of them are insulated, have 100-amp electrical service, lights, and AC.  (I need to do that to at least a couple more of them, as the AC protects from the salt air.)  Yes, the 2 cars in the attached garage are 'imprisoned' there, but they are both projects in work.

I'll bet your neighbors love you.

And just how does your comment apply to the OP's request?  Rather than respond to his question, you seemingly only want to attack someone who does.  But in response to your snide comment, yes many of my neighbors stop by to talk about the cars and take pictures of them when I have one or more of the trailers open...which is practically every day.  And for what it's worth, many of my neighbors have boats, jet skis, RVs, and trailers parked in and alongside their driveways as well.  As long as everything has a current license plate, it's legal and complies with all zoning requirements.  That was my input to the OP's question.

Yeah, I will apologize for being snarky. Lots of times our neighbors don't even like seeing our cars parked around our house. Those trailers are as you admitted, not very attractive. But as you said, they work for you, and comply with legal restrictions. I am sure that my neighbors don't understand why I have so many cars, but I try to avoid problems by minimizing their effect on curbside parking. Only two are parked at the curb.  I don't own any valuable old cars, but they are all running, usable, and presentable looking, as well as registered and insured. I do my thing and my neighbors do theirs. I should show you the respect of letting you do yours.

As I get older I am really beginning to wonder why I wanted to have so many cars, but that's another topic to explore.

The front of my house is fine, I have a large shop and garage around the back, a piece of construction equipment, a few old cars and lots of junk. I saw a nice stone look vinyl fence and told my son that it would look nice along the road to 'hide' my hoard. Without batting an eye he replied "Why dont you just get rid of the junk?"

That wouldnt be any fun!!

Apology accepted.  Even though I don't like parking on the street, I do keep my Yukon XL parked at the curb in front of my house.  There's room for it in my driveway next to the Escalade and Vette, but if I leave the curb open, my next-door neighbor always parks one or more of their cars there.  They have 5 cars and 4 drivers.  Then their car(s) block me from pulling my trailers out and shuffling cars around.  They rarely park in front of their own house.  They always park in front of someone elses, even though they have a 4-car driveway (2-car garage is full of junk,).  Usually their driveway is half empty...I guess so they don't block each other in.

And once again, this thread is taking on a meandering life of it's own.

Garages like bank accounts are never big enough.

A Doctor friend of mine was building a toy barn. We were talking about it at a get together. I asked what he was going to store in the barn. He said my big boat, my small boat, my truck, lawnmowers, tools, my wife's convertible, my second car etc... I then asked the size of the barn. When he answered I said Doc that barn is full. He asked if I was serious, and I told him I was as serious as a heart attack. He asked several other friends who were standing around and they agreed. He asked me what to do and I replied double the size. He immediately called his builder and told him to double the size of the barn. He has had it for 5 or 6 years now and it is full.

But you asked where my cars are stored. Here are a couple photos.

Beautiful 'garage' if you can call it that. I think I may have made a comment in the past regarding the 580 Super K. I would be willing to bet that is the nicest one in existence and no doubt the only one that can claim a 'garage kept' title. Very Nice!!
