1949 Buick Oil Filter Identification

1964 Impala

Recommended Posts

I have a 1949 Buick Special 40 series engine and ordered an oil filter off of autozone. It however does not fit my oil filter canister and was not the same design as the old one that was in the engine. The old one is pictured below and I have tried to use the Allstate number to track down a cross reference filter but to no avail. Anybody know what number of oil filter this is?

Thanks,

TR

Keep checking Hastings or Napa.  There are cross ref numbers out there and available.  Also Bobs or Cars would have them.  The last filters i got were Hastings for both my 40 and 50.  You can find original AC filters at swap meets but when I do, i just keep them for for display on my shelf.  I’’ve had no problem with Hastings.

The canister and its lid look correct. It appears to be the same as the original AC canister on my 1949 Super, which takes a P-127 canister. (I've owned the car since 1978.) There should be a conical spring inside the cap to hold down the filter.

The Baldwin Filter P26, available from Bob's Automobilia, fits.  I found that the cross-referenced filter from NAPA (I believe it to be a Wix filter) ended up being too tall, either because of shaft clearances or something else. Years ago, Fram had the correct filter, which could have been sourced from someone other than Wix.

I am puzzled, though, with your measurements. The Baldwin P26 appears to roughly measure: 4-3/16" diameter, 4-5/16" length, 1/2" shaft.
