skootch13
Hello, I am trying to start a 1928 28-20 that has been non running for 15 years. The car is not a basket case by any means. The owner cannot find the key. I thought "no problem since" I can flip the ignition "ON/OFF" lever freely. I have fuel to the carb. Do I have to have the key inserted and turned on so that something inside the switch completes the circuit? I have confirmed that I have no spark by pulling a lead and laying a plug against the block. Where can I get a blank for a 1928 Buick if I must have a key? HarryLime
You have a Kellogg (patented) ignition system . It is unlocked as you can see the ON position . You only need a key if you want to lock the switch and the steering column . Why loosen the drive screws holding the switch cover ?
skootch13
OK. Key is not needed. Thank you. Any ideas on how to test to see where the fault is for no spark?
Mark Shaw
First, check for power at the coil with ignition on and off. That will verify the switch is or is not working. 1
Oldtech
1. As Mark says, verify power to the coil 2. if the coil is original, visually check the resistor is not damaged 3 Check the breaker points. Setting correct, point condition, clean and moving correctly. 4 clean and re- tighten all connections. 5. Check spark by pulling coil wire from cap, hold it 1/4' from metal and have someone operate starter. 6 If still nothing replace condenser. After this, if still no spark, testing of components is required. - another post

28Buick
lol. I am waking this 1.5 year old thread with a final answer. I am the new owner of this 28-20 Standard and it is now running great. It needed a new coil. The key is still missing. Carl's Lock Shop picked the spare tire lock and made me a new key and tumbler.
