Hupp36
I asked this question on the Mustang site 12 Lookers and no response. Do you know if this tag is Ford or a reproduction?
1912Staver
The emblem may or may not be real. You would have to see the back side to determine if it is O.E.M. Ford production or re - production. But I don't think any of the 1968 Mustangs like your photo shows used this emblem { I don't think that the 1968 1/2 CJ's used it either }. It is found on 68 Shelby GT 500 KR's. At some point a Mustang owner decided to install it. Looks good , but not a stock part on a Mustang.
Hupp36
Thank you for your reply, I know the engine is a big block with a 4 speed standard transmission. I should have the car tomorrow so I can check the engine code.
alsancle
I see a lot of Shelby add on items. Is that a 67 or a 68? It looks like a 67 so it wouldn't have the 428CJ. Maybe a 390.

So unless it’s a Shelby, that somebody took half the stuff off of it won’t have a 428, and it wouldn’t be a cobra jet in any event.
dustycrusty
by those suspicious holes ahead of the "Mustang" script, I suspect it also had an another emblem similar to this added to the fender
Hupp36
Wow what and adventure I am on. I will post pic of the inside of the car an engine compartment. I will also be checking out all the serial numbers.
alsancle
Chuck, If you have a real 390 four speed car that is pretty desirable. I doubt it will be a Shelby as too much stuff missing. That would be too good to be true.
1912Staver
Rear 1/4 vents are 1967. So 99% chance car is a 67. The 1/4 vents are a better indication than the marker lights. So 390 is top engine option. But a 428 { Mustang ,Torino and Cyclone version } can be bolted into any 1967 - 70 Mustang with the right mounts and exhaust manifolds. Let us know what you find when you get a chance to have a good look at it.
joe_padavano
The VIN will tell you exactly what model year this is. There's no reason to speculate. This car was hit with a bunch of repro parts. It wouldn't surprise me if the car is a 289.
Hupp36
Thank you for your response. All I really wanted to know was if the 428 Cobra jet tag was a Ford part or a reproduction. I think I got that answer. Now when I get the car home, I will check the serial # like you said. And yes being 55 years old and a number of owners, it more than likely has a lot of repo parts. It still looks a little bad to the bone to me.
