what kind of bolts

There's a sixteen year gap between your 1917 and my 1933. I would feel more comfortable if someone with an earlier model could post photos.

For what it's worth, on my '33, some appear to be truss head and some appear to be oval head.

I believe the truss head screws are minimally stronger than the oval head, but the oval head adds trim value where obviously visible.

The sloted screw or truss head srcew I think has my vote. One can use a painted flat washer with it or not. The truss head does have a over sized head. The person who put mine together last used regular bolts unpainted and it does not look right at all. Thanks, any other pictures would be great.  Thanks again  Roger
