chris piazza
Howdy all, can anyone explain the different mountings of the rear spare tire from coupe to sedan? I have a couple off of sedans and I would like to use on my coupe project, but I feel now after looking at photographs and installing the pieces to the frame of my coupe that there is a big difference. I looked in the parts book but found only one set of numbers for both the sedan and coupe. Did I read it wrong? Has anyone out there tried this? Unfortunately, I already cut the hole below the trunk lid for the pipe that slides into the receiver bolted to the frame. I'd like to solve this mystery before painting. Thanks!!
studerex
When I did my 35 roadster I found the same difference. I had to modify the base of post to aim at the hole.
chris piazza
Thanks Rex! Did you retain the mechanism that unhooks the wheel to tilt it forward? Presumably to clear the trunk lid? You wouldn't happen to have an extra stainless trim ring, would you? studerex
Chris No did not use the tilt post I think that was only to gain access the trunk on a sedan. I think I still have one.

37S2de
This post intrigued me, so today I finally remembered to take the cover off my ‘35 Commander sedan and look at the spare tire mounting. I remembered that the access door to check the tire pressure on mine was at the top, and Rex’s Roadster has it at the bottom. I tried rotating the tire around so that the valve stem is at the bottom, but no matter which mounting studs I put it on, it was not going to line up. So there’s another difference between Roadsters (and maybe Coupes) and sedans the real question is: How did Rex manage to install the covers without ruining the paint? I know the answer, but I’ll put it out there for a consensus. Tom
studerex
The face plate has a rubber around the edge. I remember slitting a vacuum hose and putting it around the edge. Then the painted surface of tire cover and face plate do not touch.

Albtrossca
My 34 Dic does not have the tilt option like the one in the picture. I'm assuming because mine has a rumble seat. I was wondering what the differences are as I have a spare that has the tilt lever.
chris piazza
I'm wonder about the difference too. Plus, since the bolt pattern on Dictator wheels and Commander/President wheels are not the same, does this mean the are further options?
Albtrossca
I'm going to pull out my original and the spare and see if I can find any differences like bolt pattern etc. I'll post pics too but it will have to wait until tomorrow.
Albtrossca
Pictures of the 2 I have. The blasted one is the original for the 34 Dictator Coupe with rumble seat. The extension tube is 19" compared to the tilt is 24"long. The bottom frame mount is identical. The bolt patterns the same. The mid frame mount is quite different.
chris piazza
So helpful to see the 2 types side by side! Thanks for sharing. If anyone following this thread has a spare non tilt post, I'd love hear from you.
studerex
I'll check with this guy. He street rodded his car and removed the rear spare. Edited December 14, 2021 by studerex (see edit history)
Buffalowed Bill
I'm surprised when I see an original 1934-35 that has not be street rodded.
chris piazza
My was headed that way, but the owner lost interest and sold it to me. Thanks Rex!!

My father started that way with mine in '72. I'm reversing the little bit that he did to make it as original as I can.
