MrEarl
If the water mannnyfole is straight it is a fitty tree mannyfole, if it has dogleg, later.

tompett
And I am interested in the 53 Spark Plug covers if selling. Also the air cleaner if 1953 4-barrel? Maybe this is a 53 Super engine with original 2 barrel, since they have switched to later intake manifold? Look for engine number, left side. Greg, One of the 180 teeth on the flywheel ring was painted yellow and it was knurled. The front side of the flywheel ring was stamped with a 5 just below this tooth. According to the Shop Manual . . . correct ignition timing exists when the yellow timing mark on flywheel gear tooth is in line with the sight pin at instant that #1 spark plug fires. Firing then occurs 5° before upper dead center for #1 piston. Can't find any yellow paint or feel the knurled tooth? Without the tranny and short of removing the flywheel, you could try locating the tooth with the 5 stamped on the front side of the ring with a flashlight and small mirror placed inside the 1"x1" sight hole. My pic gives you an idea where to start looking. Starting in May 1953, a harmonic balancer was added to Buick's first-year V8 engine. Change point was noted as Engine Number 146501 (without the V-prefix and either a 5 for Super or 7 for Roadmaster suffix). Let me know if you were able to find it without removing the flywheel. The earlier (1953), had a convex shape just below the inlet at the front. The later version had an inside curve/concave shape under the inlet opening at front. Maybe there was a early and a late 1953 or maybe two versions same time different Buick factory locals? Anyone got facts on that question? Maybe some 53 Skylark guys? ..... To set the record straight: ♦ There was not an early-1953 and a late-1953 Buick V8 four-barrel carburetor silencer/air cleaner assembly. ♦ The 1953 and the 1954 assemblies were the same except for the air cleaner cover lid.....the 1953 had 16 raised stiffener ribs whereas the 1954 air cleaner cover lid had 16 recessed stiffener ribs. ♦ Both 1953 and 1954 silencers were convex-shaped in the lower front. ♦ Both 1955 and 1956 silencers were concave-shaped in the lower front.
