Coupling discs

Recommended Posts

I probably have included this with the fan belt question. This may also be the solution to my engine problems. The fiber discs that couple the drive to the waterpump, distributor, and generator are in bad shape. I am wondering if there is a source for these. I can fabricate if necessary. I tried cutting the sidewall out of an old tire but it is curved. That make centering the bolt holes nearly impossible.

If the distributor is driven from these, you might like to check for stability of the timing. Put a mark at TDC for a cylinder (there might be one already somewhere, like on vibration damper or flywheel) and put a timing lot on the cylinder to which that is referenced. Look at the mark while the engine is running. Is it stable or does it wander around? It should be stable as long as the engine revs do not change. If it wanders around, the distributor has a problem, either loose shaft in the base of the distributor or perhaps these drive disks or even loose centrifugal advance system.
