Vintman
Hi Folks. Received the photos below from the US advising: " Unidentified British Car? Here are some shots of a body only I rescued in Los Angeles short while ago. Alloy body, mixed wood and steel body frame, steel front and rear wings - no bonnet, radiator, frame, engine etc Would be most thankful if someone could possibly make an ID!" Our wise sages both in the UK and Europe have not come up with anything so far. Perhaps not a British car? Seems LHD unless (smallish) cutout on lower right dash panel is place for steering column. Numberplate on wrong side, and the number could be French (75/Paris)? Remnants of, or location place for, an owners plate on dashboard by the speedo/rev. Unusual fuel filler cap but could be a 'Bonora' as on MGs. Non British air vents on scuttle. Some French sports car kept RHD until WW2. Any thoughts would be appreciated Regards Vintman (UK) www.svvs.org Edited April 28, 2017 by Vintman error (see edit history)
Casper Friederich
It would be the well intregated, wellded fuel tank witch is non-British. Some German coachbuilder's in the 30s tried to imitate the British sportscars idiome on BMW chassis, but none was as convincing as this to my memory. Ric Dean
‘Parisian in America’ ... Nice looking design! Have you tried to run the plate number, doesn’t look like USA, which County is it? The Instrument Panel appears to be set up for LH drive? Good luck, Ric
Vintman
Could be French, and if so, 75 would be Paris. Vintman
Vintman
I contacted the enquirer about the brass plate on the dash and he advised that is read as follows. Does anybody have any idea what it might mean? Regards Vintman "Removed plate, seems to be steel with thin bronze finish, text reads - 1000 = 43 1500 = 51 2000 = 68 2500 = 85 3000 = 102 3500 = 119 4000 = 136 4500 = 153 5000 = 170 5500 = 167 Nothing on read side of plate - that's it." 1937hd45
Some photos of the body sill to chassis might help. That rear panel under the spare tire and odd shaped hole in the front fender in the lower front remind me of Bugatti features. Bob
1937hd45
Best shot I could find to show that front fender shock mount bar clearance hole in the front fender. Bob
1937hd45
Type 40 Bugatti with a back panel some what like yours. Note the quarter elliptic rear spring, see if your body would have clearance fore this setup. Bob
