antique car jacks were bottle jacks, right?

I have a 1933 ford, If I use a bottle jack is there a secure place to put it for changing ma rear tire and also a front tire if I get a flat?

Frank, if you are talking about hydraulic bottle jacks then the answer is no. All early fords came with mechanical jacks of different varieties in the tool kits. I also use a hydraulic bottle jack and I made an adaptor to fit over the top of the ram with a pipe coupling and a "U" shaped bracket that surrounds the axle. Never try to jack a car with a bottle jack by only using the top of the ram.

Not antique cars when this happened, but back around 1981 a friend of mine and I both had 1971 Triumph TR6s.

 

I was not around at the time this happened, but he was using a bottle jack to change one of his rear tires in his driveway and got the car jacked up and the wheel off, when the bottle jack slipped.

 

He was wearing sneakers and the rear brake drum landed on his big toe.  He said hit hurt so bad that he gained super strength the he never new he had and picked the car up high enough by the top of the wheel arch to then pulled his foot out from under the brake drum.

 

The moral of the story, "Bottle jacks can be very dangerous".

No bottle jacks then, but you could get a bottle of jack.
