Rusty_OToole
I have a 1942 Chevrolet, which appears to have a newer engine installed. It is a six cylinder, it has the 2 bolt valve cover, short side cover, and the oil fill cap is on the valve cover. Serial Number C463973 Engine block casting Number 3695408 Serial number is deeply stamped but the spacing and alignment of the letters is hit or miss, as if they were hand stamped. Casting number is at the front right side of the block, above the pan rail, with a big GM above it. I can't find either of these numbers in the lists I find on the net. Possibly because it is a Canadian engine? Can anyone tell me exactly what engine I have?
61polara
Rusty,The serial number is not in my US serial number listing range either. I don't have Canadian numbers.
cahartley
Some photos would be of great help.It could be any of 3 three different engines, a 216 or 235 or maybe even a 261 since yours is Canadian.
Rusty_OToole
What program do you recommend? I have an old Kodak digital camera model Easyshare CX7300. A few months ago I got a new computer and have not downloaded a photography program. I have Photo Gallery, guess I can use that. Later... OK here we are. The old camera worked better than I expected, I highlighted the casting number with chalk for clarity. Can anyone tell me what this engine is exactly? My guess is a 235 Chev six with babbitt bearings and low pressure oiling from about 1951. Beltfed
For what it's worth. I had an inline six with the same problem. The serial number started with a C. After much searching, found out it was a dealer replacement engine and the C didn't fit into any production codes. Mine was a 250 c.i. and as you know, looks very different than yours. misterc9
The two bolt valve cover is 53 or older. The plate on the drivers side of the block by the exhaust pipe is for a filter this makes it a low pressure babbitt engine . The short side cover is 50 and newer 235. Those numbers don't match anything in the books I have. It's not a 216 or 261.
