65 sheet metal production fault?

Has anyone else noticed this interesting mismatch on some 65's where the left fender meets the front hood lip? I asked my painter to fix this error which I thought was the result of a poor accident repair. Since then I have seen lots of 65's with the same fault.

Take a look at your 65 and you may be surprised as we were at the ROA Regional Meet downunder.

We had 9x 65 Rivs and about 50% had this mismatch.

My theory is that at some stage in production there was a breakage with the stamping die and it was subsequently repaired poorly, leading to this error in sheet metal? If I'm right, all 65's built after that date should have the fault. What do I tech advisers think?

Yes Tony, my '65 GS has that left fender to hood lip fault. My car was built in the second week of 1965 (build date code 01B).

so, does this mean that my car was built 4th week of July?

the decoder says Model Year – NOT built year….

i.e. it's the 65 Model Year Riv.

So does anyone know the months between which they made 65 MODEL YEAR Rivs in 1965….?

e.g. did they make 65 Rivs from Sept 64 til Sept 65 ? or throughout a different period

actually, as per your email I looked at our Production Serial #s Tony:

Tony: 18343

Me: 279947

maybe yours was built Sept 64 and mine in July 65 ?

Speculating this since 34,585 65 Rivs were produced and gawd knows how many other models at Flint plant.... thus accounting for the big gap (261604) in our serial #s

or maybe the Serial # is completely independent of sequencing....?

or maybe Tony's car was the 18,343rd 65 model Buick or GM car made in the 65 model year run?

or then again, maybe NOTHING like this...

My 64 has this issue too. Late build date of June.

While my '64 doesn't have this anomaly (built December '63), I have seen it on many first gen Rivs that were for sale on the internet. Always thought it was a fit and finish issue but obviously I was wrong.

I have 2 Rivis:

car #118 first day of production car most likely. 08C build code so 3rd week of August, 1964. Fisher body #1777. It has the defect. Both fenders exhibit it, but the drivers side is much more pronounced.

car #29516. This one is a GS with a 03D build code 3rd week of March, 1965. The fenders and hood don't line up perfectly, but they are even with each other and very close to the hood line as well.
