Guest 38buick55special
I am looking for a procedure to disassemble/assemble the dash in my 55 buick. I finally received the shop manual I ordered for the car. But it doesn't have anything in there about the dash.
Bleach
You either need the body manual or a parts catalog.
Bhigdog
I don't think there is any manual that addresses dash removal/dis-assembly for 1955. That said, the entire dash with all instruments is removable as a unit. It's been awhile, and folks who have done the job will most likely chime in but as I remember the dash top is removed by removing the garnish molding then the top screws. The steering column needs to go as does all the cables, wires etc hooked to dash, then the screws that hold the dash in place. Not a terribly pleasant job but pretty straight forward in that what you see is what you get. As for removing the gauges and all the other stuff it's really pretty apparent what needs to happen. Just make a lot of notes, take a lot of pix, and mark a lot of stuff.................Bob
Bleach
I didn't imply the books I suggested would show to remove the dash but they might show an exploded view of all the parts involved.I removed the dash from my 51 Cadillac and it wasn't really that difficult. It was very much like Bhigdog explained.
Mudbone
Bob is right on. (I am assuming you are doing a complete restoration if you are removing the dash) I pulled the dash with all the wiring intact. Be careful with the temp sender, as they like to twist off in the head. Anyway it has been awhile since I removed mine and as of yet has not started on that part of the restoration. I do remember supporting the dash after it was loose so I could feed the cables and wire through the firewall. I then made a simple stand for it so when the time comes I can work on it easily. I have some photos if that will help. Mud
Bleach
It looks like there's a lot to the dash of a 55 Buick. I removed everything that was removable to the dash of my Cadillac; instruments, radio, heater controls, etc. I left the wires on the firewall so I could better see them for replacement. I was able to lift out the dash shell very easily which was very light with noting left on it. Whether my dash is similar or not, it might be easier to proceed in this manner than struggle with entire dash as an assembly.
