David White
Just wondering how long I can stretch it before I have to change the timing chain in our 1990 Reatta 3800? it's got 290000 klms on it now
D-a-n-i-e-l
If you do not rod it forever. The rest of the motor will give out first. On the other hand if it has been driven hard I would say it is due. Either way the tensioner should probably be changed.
charlie1
I changed mine at 125K. If it breaks the motor is finished.
Machiner 55
David,Have to agree with Daniel on this one. At 180.197.646 the chain is still good. The tensioner would be more of a concern.John F. Edited November 7, 2013 by Machiner 55 (see edit history)
harry yarnell
Why would it break? Never heard of a chain breaking; belts, yes, but chains...?
padgett
Have heard a few cases of a chain with a bad tensioner wearing through the side of the chain case but not breaking. Timing belts do that. I also suspect the 3800 is not an interference engine but would not bet a valve on it.
2seater
Tensioner wear is a greater concern as mentioned. It is a non-interference engine.
