dlh61olds
Magnefine 5/16 Inch Magnetic Inline Transmission FilterI have installed one of these in the transmission cooler return line on my Starfire.Ther are probably 3-5000 miles on the tranny and I did not clean the internal filter. In the return line to pick up anything that could come from the cooler. Most owners know the internal filter is a pain to change and hard to find.I will soon add one to my Dynamic 88 coupe. Why would this not be good for any automatic transmission???Comments please.Dave Edited March 25, 2013 by dlh61olds (see edit history)
PONTIAC1953
i wouldn't rely on a little magnetic toy for filtering the trans fluid, you can plumb in a remote spin on type real filter. i once had a good friend who like to change his own oil, but the little ford he bought had a transverse mounted four cylinder engine and the oil filter was where he couldn't get ot it. so i installed for him a remote oil filter kit, then he could just reach under the car body behind the right front wheel and r & r the oil filter. charles coker, 1953 pontiac tech advisor. PONTIAC1953
there are two ebay listings currently for a slim jim trans filter with pan gasket. charles coker, 1953 pontiac tech advisor.
rocketraider
Dave, I don't think this magnetic filter will hurt anything, but I'm also not sure how much it will actually help. But- anything to keep from having to tear into a Slim Jim. More to the point, trying to find someone who will work on one.I think I'd like something with actual filter media in it better. dlh61olds
This filter is in addition to the original filter.Read this link http://magnefinefilters.com/Magnefine-5-16-Magnetic-Inline-Transmission-Filter-R516M.htmIf I can prevent a failure of the Slim Jim for $16 it seems to me that would be a good return on investment.Besides the dual action filter media takes out foreign matter to 3 microns,in addition to the magnetic trap, definetly not a toy.I really doubt the 1961 engineering standards went that low.The manufacturer recommends a 30,000 mile interval for changing the external filter. I doubt I drive mine that far. Here is the manufacturers response to my question"""If the Transmission does not have any issues the factory recommends 30k miles.Regards,Greg"""Request: I am installing the 5/16' Magnefine filter on my 1961 Oldsmobiles. What would be the service life of one filter in miles ????Thanx, DaveAnyway thought I'd throw this out for others who mightbe concerned about transmission failures on their precious cars.I can't afford not to.Dave Edited March 26, 2013 by dlh61olds (see edit history)

TexRiv_63
Correct internal filters are available from Fatsco, I put one on my 63. No more difficult to change than most automatics. No comment on the add-on but I would definitely change the internal filter first!
starfireelvis
Just echoing TexRiv_63, Fatsco has thankfully been re-producing these for a little while now; bought a pair when the Starfire and wagon trannies were thankfully put back together by a trusty old car guy who knew them when, and bought a couple extra just in case. I believe they were something like $65 apiece, give or take.
