1936 Dodge Coupe door locks

My Coupe only has a door lock installed on the passenger door. Is this normal? Everything looks stock.

That is very typical of nearly every brand of car back in that era. Watch an old movie and you'll notice they'll often get in the passenger side and slide across the seat...

Not sure why. I've heard it was for safety reasons to get people to enter and exit the car from the curb side. Seems like it might also have been a cost savings measure too.

Yes....very normal for the late twenties through the 1930's. The driver's door locks by lifting the interior door handle or pushing it forward. The passenger front door locked from the outside.

Yup, only one outside key locking door in those days. Even on the four doors.

I recall it being said that back in those days, cops gave tickets to drivers who entered their cars on the left. I guess with all of those Fords and GM cars using those feeble mechanical brakes anyone standing in the street was at substantial risk!

In most areas there were no painted lines down to separate halves of the street and so the woman drivers got confused where they should be!
