contact the shop you will use to have it plated, they usually know who can do the repairs before the plating. some shops will see the parts thru the whole process. Once I had a piece repaired by a friend and after plating the repair stood out a bit because it was smoother and finer than the rest of the piece!

You can tell the difference mostly by the radiator shells, but there are hundreds of other differences. 1928 and 1929 are similar to one another. 1930 and 1931 are similar to one another. Here are the 1929 and 1930 Model As respectively...

I think he means the cowl band difference. As Pistoncollector stated, the 28- 29 isn't stainless. Originally they were just nickel which doesn't have the luster of chrome. This is true for all the shiny parts on 28-29. Over years of restoration and re-restoration many of these parts get chrome plate. Most repop parts are chromed, also. The shape of the band is slightly different and the 28-29 is shorter but you have to have a 30-31 to compare.

For those interested in this subject, there is one other 1929 Model A Ford that was originally equipped with cowl lights and a cowl band......the Town Car. In fact, the Town Car is the first Model A equipped with these items....months before either the Town Sedan or Cabriolet were introduced.
