pistoncollector
Does anyone have a really nice cowl band for a 1929 Town Sedan that they are willing to sell? If not, can you recommend someone who can remove the dents and dings and have mine plated? Please let me know. keiser31
Isn't it stainless?
pistoncollector
The cowl bands were not made of stainless steel until 1930. The 1929's were nickel plated brass for the most part. Some of them were chrome plated.
keiser31
Thanks for the lesson. Always good to learn more.
pistoncollector
You're welcome. The only two Model A Ford body styles that used a cowl band in 1929 were the Town Sedan and the Cabriolet .... unlike the 30-31's which all have one. So the 1929 cowl band is a scarce item indeed. That's why I am looking for a good one or someone who can restore mine to mint condition.
Dave Mellor NJ
Those two bodies are also the only ones that had cowl lights originally
JFranklin
contact the shop you will use to have it plated, they usually know who can do the repairs before the plating. some shops will see the parts thru the whole process. Once I had a piece repaired by a friend and after plating the repair stood out a bit because it was smoother and finer than the rest of the piece! gofasttoday
How does one tell a 29 from a 30-
keiser31
You can tell the difference mostly by the radiator shells, but there are hundreds of other differences. 1928 and 1929 are similar to one another. 1930 and 1931 are similar to one another. Here are the 1929 and 1930 Model As respectively... Edited September 21, 2011 by keiser31 (see edit history)
Dave Mellor NJ
I think he means the cowl band difference. As Pistoncollector stated, the 28- 29 isn't stainless. Originally they were just nickel which doesn't have the luster of chrome. This is true for all the shiny parts on 28-29. Over years of restoration and re-restoration many of these parts get chrome plate. Most repop parts are chromed, also. The shape of the band is slightly different and the 28-29 is shorter but you have to have a 30-31 to compare.

Guest Timothy Kelly
For those interested in this subject, there is one other 1929 Model A Ford that was originally equipped with cowl lights and a cowl band......the Town Car. In fact, the Town Car is the first Model A equipped with these items....months before either the Town Sedan or Cabriolet were introduced.
