bepnewt
I have a cracked windshield, now. Is there any reason with these older windshields why having one of those windshield fixing people won't work? I just want it patched for now until I can deal with getting some new glass. In case details will help... it has a tiny chip near the bottom in the middle and the crack goes down the the bottom from there and about 2 inches upwards. It's too dark to get a pic right now.-BEPNewt
whitewatersky
very interested to hear what people recommend here. It'll no doubt be an issue for me at some point.... also, is there a recommended supplier. My Riv apparently has some scratches on the windscreen and I may need to do something about it (hope not!)are the screens a common size with other GMs of the same year? JZRIV
Brian,As far as I know they can repair bullseye type chips which helps prevent the chip from turning into a crack. In your case its already cracked so not sure if a repair to the epicenter will keep it from cracking more but its worth calling a shop to make sure. The windshield being older shouldn't prevent them from using the same techniques to repair. We're leaving for vacation the second I get home so the car is going to sit with this crack for 8 days. I really hope it doesn't get any bigger while we're gone.I read some other threads about windshields and if I understand correctly there were / are some repop ones made, although not USA made and possibly without the blue tint stripe. I'm definitely not ready to get this fixed now ( unless it gets a lot worse ) but I am open to hearing approximate prices for new glass and places I should look when it's time. I don't see any on eBay right now or at Cars, Inc.Also, is it the same front glass in all first gens? Thanks, guys. Major downer.-BEPNewt

They actually drill a tiny hole at the end of the crack, then fill it with their repair resin. This stops the crack from going further. Actaully works this way in heavy steel, too. Cracks spread due to drastic temperature changes. The car shut up in the garage for a few days shouldn't change the temperature enough to make the crack spread any further. Do you have an interest in a '68 Wildcat that's sitting in OKC, Steve? It's a project car. ProSource
Hi I just happened to check out some threads tonight. been a while. Todd i remember sending yours to you in IL from our distributor. We have none left here and the only ones out there presently are repros. They are fine and of course the USA made PPG brands would be a better choice but far and few between now.Since these only fit 63-65 Riviera with no interchange, the demand to remake these is low. Right now they are running approx $295 for the ones we can get + freight. As for the cracks and chips- there is a lot that can be done . I am not in that end of the business and would like to sell new windows but I understand that the cost factor ( and insurance/ deductible) can make you hold off.. for as long as you can. I am driving a 2001 Landcruiser with a star chip and rather hazy windshield so I can appreciate folks not wanting to change it any time soon. But if the chip/ crack is near the edge then it will not be successful long term. It's great when it is away from the edge and only a couple of inches. Just my 2 cents.. anyone needs one we can still supply. Richard
