Guest Posted December 17, 2001 Share Posted December 17, 2001 While I have to agree that most of the Scandinavian cars are unimpressive (some even unpleasant) to look at, the Volvo P1800 still looks great after all these years. As I recall, the coachwork was done in England (Jensen?). I don't know where the design work was done, but it bears little resemblance to the rest of the Swedish offerings. Tom Deering Posted December 18, 2001 Share Posted December 18, 2001 Since there are a few folks on this thread who seem to have some familiarity with Scandinavian trivia; perhaps you could answer my question. I have observed an almost 100% usage of mud flaps on cars built or registered in Sweden. Is there some kind of federal law mandating the use of these appendages? If you don't know what I mean by the term "mud flap", here's a description: an extra piece of rubber mounted below the rear fender behind the wheel. Sweds export all those cars to the US and we grab them up, especially those Volvos for the soccer mom segment. I believe that the #1 selling car brand in Sweden is SAAB. Anders, help me out on the accuracy of this one.<P>I owned a SAAB 900S for more than ten years and it was among the best I've ever owned considering reliability and fun to drive aspects of owning a car. Was it a beautifully styled car? Not really. But it was well made! <BR> <BR>I hope you have noted that Americans don't put Christmas lights on our land yachts. Just holiday wreaths on the grill! (My husband had owned a 1961 in a previous lifetime, and he actually liked it enough to look for one as a collector car.) <P>Believe me, NO ONE could figure out what it was when we took it on the road. It sure got a lot of attention, though. Sadly, we ended up selling it and now it lives in Canada. Maybe they appreciate them better up there?!?<P>We sent pictures of the car to several relatives of mine in the Stockholm area. I'm of Swedish descent (my maternal grandparents were born there) and I thought they'd get a kick out of the fact that we had a Swedish car. The reply from most of them was that we were nuts for buying it.
