Guest 40 Buick 51c
Well, it has finally warmed up enough for me to get the gas tank out of my Buick and clean it out (hasn't been run in 10 years). Got it out and emptied about 8 gallons of old gas out of it. Surprisingly there was no corrosion or sludge. My problem is that the drain plug on the bottom, it's stuck and the square end is no longer square. I've tried WD-40 with no luck. I've thought about heating the opening but figured I'd see if anyone had any better ideas first. Also, is a new one something that would be carried at my local parts house? Grandpa
Do not apply heat to an empty gas tank. The result will be a very unpleasant surprise (if you survive). The plug is a NPT, which is commonly available. Drill and tapping may work, but I would leave it as is.Grandpa
Guest 40 Buick 51c
Thanks Grandpa. That's what I was afraid of. Guess I will just leave it as it is.

JohnD1956
Personally I would not have used WD 40. You'd be much better off using PB Blaster. A little squirt every day for a week, then put a small stiltson wrench on it with a length of pipe if needed.
Ben Bruce aka First Born
I agree with John. PB Blaster will probably do the trick. Did on my 50 that had been setting for 37years. Came off with a normal end wrench. Ben
Guest 40 Buick 51c
I'll give that a try, thanks.
JohnD1956
You may find it helps to tap directly on top of the wrench while you are pulling to loosen the plug
bhclark
When I had my '40, I twisted the drain plug clear out.My local radiator shop soldered a new one in it's place for $7.Don't know why they stopped putting drain plugs in....would love to have one in every car. Trasnsmission pans too.
Larry Schramm
I am sure money was the main reason. Cost cutting.
trp3141592
HiProbably saved 50 to 75 cents per car. They didn't care what it cost YOU not to have a drain plug available.--Tom
