    Life almost isn't worth living

Decisions have consequences.  If you have pre-existing conditions and and make the wrong decision you may not be living.  Since the virus sheds for 7-14 days  before the person becomes symptomatic you may be putting loved ones at risk also.  We all appreciate the gravity that Steve and the Board face in making these decisions.  No one here has mentioned the liability issue of some one going to Hershey and then dying of Covid-19. I am sure Hershey Attorneys are thinking of it.  Walmart is already being sued.  What ever the function you decide to attend you you aren't just putting yourself at risk.  If the risk were singular I would say to He__ with it, take my chances and go.  However my wife is immune compromised and her father is in his 90's with COPD.  Not sure it is worth isolating for 14 days in a motel before rejoining the family. We need to weigh ALL the factors before making rash decisions.  Even if a vaccine is developed by then (unlikely) how effective was your flu shot this year?  45% for adults and 55% for children.

What leads you to believe this vaccine will be different?  Just some things to think about.  Many unanswered questions.  Pray for Steve and the Board.  They have some tough days ahead.

We're running low on our favorite wine in a box.

We are in our 4th week  of isolation with our 11 y/o triplet grandsons.  Fortunately I purchased 3 cases of wine locally and another 2 cases online so we are in good shape for some time.  We have been home schooling since day one.  We get a weekly work schedule from the school.  Normally the kids can complete a weeks work in one day.  They say this amount of school work in usual.  No wonder our education system is failing.  When this is over I am going to miss being a substitute parent 24-7.  Stay safe.

  3. When I purchased my 66 GTO Clone last year the last 12 minutes cost me $6000.  I was very happy with BAT and would not hesitate to buy or sell a car there.  You always have two minutes to raise the last bid, no sniping.  Also the week of comments can be very informational after you weed out the group that comments on everything.  You have the opportunity to question the seller on line and inspect the car if you desire.

if it wasn't so cold outside.

Turn the thermostat up or move south like many of us did.  I keep a bottle of single malt available to fortify my coffee cup, no coffee.  Wife could never understand why I had to have a comfortable recliner in my shop

but we have food, medical necessities, and TP - so we're good for now.

This will end one day.  Can't wait to get back to NO.  Spent one week a month there for eight years starting right after Catrina.  Sure miss French Quarter Festival

Starting our 4th week of isolation (wife is immunodeficient) accompanied by our 11 year old triplet grandsons (parents work in the service industry)  Getting good at home schooling.  I am amazed that no one is getting cabin fever here yet.  Spent yesterday cancelling hotels for cancelled tours and Pate swap meet.  Living on a small ranch is a plus as there is always maintenance to do.  Regarding masks just get on U Tube videos for about 15 different  directions.  The only thing a Non M 95 mask does is help protect you from droplet contamination which is important.  More importantly it will lessen the chance of an infected person who is shredding virus from contaminating you with their normal breathing.  When the serology test becomes available we will be shocked at how many of us had Covid 19 without major symptoms.  Son was at Wal Mart yesterday and no one was following guidelines including the staff.  Five per cent wearing masks.

Grandson finishing his graduate program and grand daughter getting her Undergraduate degree from Oklahoma University in a few weeks.  All parties are cancelled  This will save me  a couple grand.  I am sure they will be happy with checks.

Thanks for starting this thread and stay safe

Why is no one in the world surprised that you would do that!  Most importantly hoping you are on the road to good health.  Why not promote your radio show here so folks can listen while they are stuck at home?

This should have 100 likes.  Tell me more about the radio show

how do you rate the various judging venues: Pebble Beach, Amelia Island,  other concours

FYI these are "Beauty Contests"  One of the factors in your cars acceptance is influenced by who you are and how much money you have contributed now and in the past along with who you know on the board.  This is the REAL world.  Authenticity will be overlooked depending on who you are.  Several years ago a noted Packard expert resigned at Pebble because he objected to awarding a class win to a Packard everyone knew had an incorrect body.  They sure are fun to attend and definitely have their place and showcase the hobby. If you have not attended a major Concours you are missing out on a fun week end of car watching and PEOPLE watching which can be as much fun as the cars.  Like Matt i have not had a car judged for over 20 years and donated all my trophies to Habitat several years ago.  I don't get concerned about value trends.  As Matt has also stated they are not going to zero.  It may mean my kids will have to drive a Buick in retirement rather than a Mercedes..

  8. My experience with CCCA was mostly positive but there are a few snobbish individuals and everyone recognizes it.  I let my membership expire when I moved to central Texas 11 years ago and discovered that Houston (4 Million) couldn't support a club and the Dallas club was inactive.  Lets not forget that there are a few similar individuals in AACA and other clubs.  During AACA judging in Dallas years ago I overheard a member of the judging team state, "We have to find a deduction on this car, He scored 100 points last week in CCCA". That in no way reflected on the whole of AACA. We should all remember the suggestions about welcoming new members.  My wife and I were at the opening event for the Texas tour last year and each club's members were sitting together and no one was welcoming newcomers in spite of 30% being on their first tour.  A suggestion would be for the host club to have a member couple at each table for sit down events.  Just my rambling thoughts

  9. I know very little about Studebaker's other  than owning probably the last surviving 12 Garford.  This is one of the best threads in the past several years in my opinion.  The knowledge and expertise of forum members is remarkable. I check several times a day for new postings.  I hope Touts will continue this thread throughout the restoration . It reminds me of when I found my 38 V-16 Cadillac Convertible with automatic transmission which had been sitting outside in Maine for 8 years with the top down, no hood and the heads laying on the ground.  It is nice to see that people in the hobby are still ready and able to step up the the plate.   Also a special thank you to Richard Quinn for helping me with history of the Garford company many years ago

  10. For those of you hiding behind the "only the elderly with pre existing conditions are at risk" a mother and her three siblings succumbed to Covid-19  after having a family dinner with an asymptomatic family member who had been exposed.  My ER physician daughter has two friends under 50 on ventilators right now.  I'm NOT driving anything anywhere but it is fun to think about it.

  11. Lets get real folks. How many hotel chains are going to be functioning after 3 months with no guests.  How many oil companies are going to survive $22 a barrel oil.  How many communities are going to be able to provide basic protection functions with reduced sales tax for three months.  How many restaurants are going to survive on a take out menu and how many AACA members are going to be willing to spend $3000 on a week long car tour after seeing their 401K drop to pre Trump levels?  I think you will have a rude awakening.  Hope I am wrong

Earl I am your age with health problems of my own.  I am more worried about being alive in June than any car tour/show.  Latest statistics suggest that you and I share a 14% mortality rate if we test positive and this applies to a significant percentage of AACA members.  STAY SAFE today so you can tour tomorrow!!!

  12. In 1978 I went to a collection in Nebraska to look at a car which I didn't purchase.  The owner showed me a 300 Sl Gullwing Coupe and a Bazzarrini GT5300 which were priced at$16,500 each.  My 12 year old son and I took the Bazzarrini for a test drive.  He never forgave me for not buying it.

Later that year I purchased a 78 Mercury Station Wagon.  The dealer had two 289 Cobra's for $8500.  I wasn't smart enough to buy any of them

  13. To assume that the Corona Virus will be gone by June is probably a stretch of the imagination given that they do not expect a vaccine for 9-12 months.  I do not think they will lift the "Mass Gathering" restrictions until the risk to the over 65 (most of us) and people with health conditions is near zero.although they may modify it, but what do I know!!!  Just imagine the liability of lifting the restrictions if people are still dying of Covid 19.

Unless you have life changing money invested in a car or cars, dont sweat it.

If Steve's comment applies to you see a financial advisor.  You need help, this is just a hobby.  If my cars disappeared tomorrow it would not effect my quality of life other than wishing I was deaf in the presence of my wife.  Agree with Mike, slowly adding Amazon,Boeing Microsoft and Apple and following the shale producers who are down 30-50% today.  As Rahm Emanuel so famously said,"Never let a crisis go to waste".
