  1. If I were in the market for a MB I would sign into BaT and set up a search function for whatever model I was looking for. You will receive a email whenever one is listed. It can be very educational as there are many knowledgeable people commenting along with a few screwballs  BaT also screens entries so you avoid most of the crap.

  2. I have owned two 380 SLC's for over 30 years.  One of the greatest road cars i have ever driven.  They do require a lot of maintenance most of which you can do yourself if so inclined.  Great online support groups.  I would disagree with others on the MB parts support.  The bean counters have taken control and the MB parts supply is being exhausted for the older versions.  As an example MB can no longer supply replacement pistons or rods for the 380.  My long time "indie" will no longer accept new 107 customers because of the parts issue.   My bottom line recommendation would be to buy the latest version of the SL.  You will enjoy it.

I was at a show today. First thing I do is put out my show board with the fire extinguisher as ballast. A lady walks by and pointed at it and said 'look, theres a fire extinguisher, thats a bad sign'.

I just shook my head. I was the only car that had one placed by the front tire.

At our annual Blue Bonnet street road show a few years ago a very nice 32 Ford caught fire as it was driving in from a loose fuel line to carb connection.   Back then few carried extinguishers and it was totally destroyed by the time help arrived.   Needless to say he got the “Hard Luck” award and after that no one was admitted to future shows without a fire extinguisher

Tell your brother to look a used motorhimes.

I agree  You can find some great bargains out there.  Two years ago I gave away my 94 Monoco diesel pusher with the 8.3 Cummins and 6 speed Allison for 10K.  Towed a 24 ft enclosed trailer and classic cars all over the country to shows/tours effortlessly for years.  Don't forget the reduced braking capacity and safety of a class B.

  5. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Yes we had a storm with lightning last evening and lost power briefly

Fortunately the hood was open and the force of the explosion appeared to be laterally toward the fender. A little acid staining on the passenger valve cover. Sure made a mess of my epoxy floor covering though.
I may have to rethink my position on maintainers. I have seven batteries hooked up and have been happy up till now. The battery in my rarely driven Mercedes is 10 years old and still load tests ok. I like Joes idea of hooking them up 4-5 days a month.

Didn't notice. I don't get HMN anymore. I'm sure you can figure out why.

I decided not to renew both HMN and HCC two years ago. Haven’t missed them. I think all of us remember the days when we couldn’t wait for HMN to arrive in the mail.

  7. Is the face plastic or glass. Is the can metal or plastic. Close up appears to show deterioration which you can expect to continue. On the other hand $500 doesn’t purchase much in the advertising world today. Point out the flaws and present a low ball offer and work from there. From your initial post he has had this available for over a year and not sold it and I doubt he has been holding it just for you. I would probably try to buy it but loosing $500 doesn’t bother me much if I like it as it is offset by gains on purchases from the 70’s and 80’s. If you are a AACA member someone in your club is probably a memorabilia collector. Tell the dealer you are very interested but would love me to show it to an expert before you buy. Let us know what you decide and thanks for posting.

  8. I started going in the 80’s and purchased a fair amount of advertising and parts in the early years.  I agree with RansomEli that it has been going downhill since before Covid and 2 years ago I knew I wasn’t coming back.  Another loss for the hobby and it won’t be the last. The demise of the Hershey Saturday car show is just the beginning imho.
