  1. Ever since I got my 63 Starfire with power steering I have had a noise that presents itself when I turn the wheels at idle or very slow speeds. It sounds like a combination of a groan and a squeak, low pitched, and seems to occur when turning right or left. It is worst at idle with the car in gear, sometime I notice it when cruising very slowly but not always. It seems to go away when I accelerate and drive at higher speeds. The fluid level is correct, the belt tension is correct and belt has been replaced, and there is no leakage anywhere. I have done the back and forth exercise to bleed the gear with no improvement. When I rebuilt the rag joint I thought it may have been caused by the coupling dragging on the top of the gear, but I adjusted it with the proper clearance and there was no change. Lately it seems to be getting louder and I can feel a little kickback in the wheel which goes away when revs increase. My car drives great except for this and I can't figure it out - has anyone else had this problem or know what could be causing it?
  2. I found some small but highly detailed enameled emblems with the 20s - 30s Cadillac Crest. They are about 15/16" wide and nickel or chrome plated, one has a center stud mount about 5/8" long and the other has a short offset mount with a separate locating pin. The one I photographed has what looks like a snap mount but others have a threaded stud. I'd like to know what years and models they are from and also where they were originally mounted, thanks.
  3. Matt, I think you've got it. Most everyone outside the hobby thinks of money as the only positive return on an original investment of money but for most of us that is not the prime motive. An example - I just sold my 57 Lincoln at a loss of about $3500.00. I owned it for about 14 months so, the way I look at it, it cost me about $7.75 a day for which I got the pleasure of learning about it, troubleshooting it, shopping for it, repairing it, cleaning it, and driving it - experiences which to me are invaluable. My investment of $7.75 a day for those experiences is a freaking awesome bargain!
  4. I think this is the only way to make real money on old cars. If you love them like most of us do your judgement is clouded and that tends to make you spend more than you should somewhere. I've owned a lot of cars over the years but never more than one or two at a time. Unlike a lot of you I have never bought to keep forever as I get tired of them after they are "done" and I move on to the next one on my hazily defined wish list. In the past I did major work myself on the cars and actually made money on quite a few, but if I ever would have counted the cost of my own labor every single car was a massive loss. Now that I have to farm out the heavy stuff I'm very happy if I can get close to breaking even.
  5. There are certainly a lot of people out there who buy cars JUST as investments and we have not treated them well on this forum. If you look at the massive price bubbles and busts with muscle cars its no different than the stock market - if you are lucky enough to buy low and sell high you make big bucks. But the guys who bought those million dollar Hemi Cuda's a few years ago and held them too long saw the other side of the coin.
  6. I had not seen their website, looks like a very nice setup and their bay rental price includes use of not only hand tools but heavy duty stuff like engine hoists. I may check it out the next time I have something to do under the car. I agree that insurance could be a problem, also possibly security since they allow long term rental for big jobs, you would need to be careful what you left lying around. I hope they can make a go of it as it seems like it would help a lot of car owners.
  7. I saw this in todays Dallas Morning News, some folks near me have opened a garage where you can rent service bays for do-it-yourself car work, called Jack Junkies. It's a 16,000 square foot facility with 18 bays, half of which have new four post lifts and $200 piece tool kits. A bay rents for $25.00 per hour. To me this seems like one of those "Why hasn't someone done this before" ideas but I'll bet someone has, anyone else seen this kind of setup?
  8. Nice looking car. I'm no Mustang expert but I thought the GTA package included the Hipo 390 engine like it did in the Fairlanes...?
  9. Post photos and prices for all your radiators please.
  10. I will soon be replacing the roof rail, door, quarter window, and trunk weatherstripping on my 63 Olds Starfire. I already have the new parts but am not sure what type of adhesive to use in duplicating the factory installation. If anyone else has done this on a similar GM car I could use any other appropriate tips.
  11. This car sold locally today so I am down to just one car. Thanks to all who followed and commented on this thread.
  12. This car has been sold locally, thanks to all who commented or inquired.
  13. Johnny, Welcome the forums, that is a beautiful car. Allan is right about the Buick forums, many experts live there including some with similar projects. Regarding your body metal question you should try to get the Fisher Body shop manual for your car, it may show what you are looking for. Good luck!
  14. The price has been reduced to $12,500. I will consider reasonable offers and interesting trades. I would really like to sell this before the end of the year.
  15. Price reduced to $12,500, will consider reasonable offers or interesting trades. I would really like to sell this car by the end of the year, someone could give themselves a great Christmas present!
  16. Not sure if this is a trend but I just rebuilt the 4GC on my Olds and the kit included multiple thickness gaskets for the valve seats and instructions to do exactly what you describe.
  17. I have always thought 1932 was a watershed year for car styling and engineering, very few ugly cars in that year. I was lucky enough to own one of the prettiest for a short time...
  18. That is a great price for a paint job, just materials alone today can cost that much! Looking good.
  19. If you've never owned an early Riv you should make that your first choice.
  20. I currently have a 1932 Model 90 hubcap for sale on Ebay, auction ends Sunday night, here is the link: Original 1932 Buick Model 90 Wire Wheel Hubcap RARE | eBay
  21. Looks like great raw material but not too raw, the interior looks great.
