  1. One of the things my Dad enjoyed most about taking our Rickenbacker to a car show or swap meet was he was sure he would not see another car like ours at the event.

He used to say Ford Model As are like elbows and a$$holes, everybody's got one.

And this was back in the 70's.

  2. I could never pick between the two pre-war cars I own since both of them have so much family history behind them.  Although Capt. Eddie's insignia is my avatar for this site.

One of them was 41 years old and the other was 44 years old by the time I was hatched.

Both of them have been in the family longer than I have, the Rickenbacker being purchased by my Dad about a year before the Pierce was purchased by my Grandfather.

I grew up riding around in them and tinkering with them.

As a kid, I always loved the look, the smell and the sounds of a pre-war car.

I always marveled at the craftsmanship it took to build one given the limited technology of the time.

The old car I put the most miles on, by far, was the '64 Malibu SS Convertible I sold last year.

The car was 3 years older than I am and was 22 years old when I purchased it.

It was my daily driver for at least 10 years.

  3. Lived in So Cal for 55 years.

I've been to the Rose Parade once.

It was a nice thing to see but the crowds, the cold and lack of facilities made me want to never do it again.

These days, I have a standing invite to stay at a friend's house who lives right on the parade route but I have not taken them up on it.

I can do that kind of artwork - it is regular and opaque water color. That was what 90% of the artists doing renderings and illustrations in the pre WWII era used

Now I'll have to dig out my original Rickenbacker sales brochure and take pics so I can post them.

The various models are all illustrated using the same watercolor technique.

  5. I've seen early Rickenbacker tail light assemblies that have a green glass stop light and a red glass running light.

I may even have a bezel with some lenses still in them for an early Rickenbacker light.

I'd have to check my boxes of stuff and see if I still have it or I've already passed it on to another Rickenbacker owner with an early car.

One of my cousins has a '24 Chrysler with a red lens that says STOP when lit.

Those colors are factory colors on many GM marques of the early thirties. In 31’, chevy had paint code 81 which was Fawn Brown, Coffee Cream, and Swamp Holly Orange for the wheels. It was production colors and not an artist rendering. So while you and others dislike it, it’s a matter of taste and it’s an original color scheme. There are many new car colors I dislike, like the old school Ford gray that they’re using again. But people are buying them so they like it. My own 31’ chevy Special Sedan is painted code 81. It is actually incorrect for a sedan as code 81 was never used on closed cars but I can tell you everyone loves the colors of my car. I have not had one person tell me they didn’t like it but of course, they could be keeping their opinion to themselves.

Maybe I'm just very different from other classic car enthusiasts, but I happen to really like the color combination of your '31 sedan.

  7. One of the striking things to me is that car dealerships used to be so much smaller than they are today.

Dealers didn't have thousands of vehicles in their inventory.

Also, look at the detail and craftsmanship that went into a building that was used for commercial purposes. Modern houses don't get one tenth of that detail unless you pay big bucks to have a house custom built.

    Zepher,

Any solid ideas of how many Rickenbackers do exist? How many basically intact and decent, running or not? How many incomplete and rough? I know the one I saw about fifty years ago belonging to a friend of a friend was one of the largest and rarest of the marque. But all of the ones I have seen have been very interesting cars! The marque has always fascinated me.

The Rickenbacker Car Club has about 35 cars listed in the registry but there are sure to be cars out there the club doesn't know about but even those stragglers wouldn't increase the numbers all that much.

We have a parts car that is not listed in the registry. Car is fairly complete except all the wood is gone so it would definitely be an upside down project to put it back together.

Capt. Eddie's entire life story is utterly fascinating when you really start to look into it.

How many cars out there have a direct connection to a man that was awarded the Medal of Honor?

One of my favorite things in the hobby is walking into a garage of collection and seeing something that is “new” to me. After all these years, they tend to be the “middle priced” cars..........all of the big horsepower stuff is seen regularly. The 1916-1928 era of mid priced off brand cars is really a unique spot in the hobby. Sadly we rarely see these fine built but unusual cars at shows or on tour.

I'm still waiting for Rickenbackers to get the respect they deserve.

And I'll most likely die before that happens.

  10. @Joe Cocuzza I hope your recovery goes well and you are back to whipping your Pierce into shape.

About 12 years ago I had major hernia surgery. Doc told me you an get hernias in 4 places, I had them in 3 of the 4.

Healing was slower than I expected and the boredom was overwhelming at times because I have never been sedentary.

But take the time to heal up right, so you can keep us entertained with your progress.

I know I'll be waiting patiently to cheer on your progress when you're back at it.
