    ATF for Hydramatic

Is that access panel on the driver side for the original master brake cylinder(servo). It is on my 50 Cadillac.
  3. Radial tires on original wheels are controversial. The flexing of the radial tire has been known to distort the rim. Tire walls on bias tires are more rigid reducing flexing and stress on the rims. You will probably loose a hubcap eventually. Sorry it happened to a friends 38 Caddy
  4. This morning I read the ingedients on a container of PEAK. It claims extended life but does not say anything about OAT, just glycol and poly glycol. So how can we insure that we are using the least harmful coolant, if nothing on the container states it. Also, what the future hold? It is not likley that consumers will chose a product that needs replacing every 2 years vs every five. Therefore, the manufacturers will discontinue a less popular product. So when the old, safe stuff is gone... than what?
  5. !948 Hudson Commodore, Physicans Hospital, Jackson Heights NY. HEY, jrope was St Vincents in Greenwich Village?
  6. Most, but not all, Hudsons & Essex from 1918 to 1932 used rear hinged 4 doors. In 1932 to 1936 virtually all HETs were rear hinged. In 1937 front doors were hinged on the A pillar
  7. Thanks Bob, I could not believe that either. I thought that I was missing something, somewhere.
  8. right, but if the spring is removed from the pin( releasing tension at cold) and thereby keeping the flapper open, will the flapper open and close depending on throttle response, or in another way of saying, back pressure sucking the flapper shut.
  9. Does the heat riser valve open and shut under deceleration, or idle, when the engine is warm and the "flapper" is free? If the tension spring is disconnected will the flapper close under on is own upon throttle release and reopen on acceleration?
  10. Spark plugs prior to 1956 were black oxide not cadmium tone as Champion and some other modern makes. AACA judging will warrant a deduction for none authentic plugs, but brand is not a criterior. If the plugs that you have are cad colored, sand the bases lightly and dip 'em in gun bluing compound. Spark plug conversion charts are available on line, especially for Champs.
  11. Did you say that you turned the dist base in the opposite direction as the turning rotor? I thought that would advance the timing. The points opening location is reached faster when turning the base into the rotor, thereby advanced. To retard, turn the base with the rotor direction. What is your altitude? for every 1000 ft there will be a drop of 1hg on the vac gauge. When you attain the max reading on the gauge back off 1 or 2 Hg. Is your advance blocked off when testing, and is it operating( holding vacuum)?there is a good way to time the engine without a light by getting the #1 plug at tdc and holding the #1 wire against the block( for ground). turn the ign switch to ON and rotate slowly until a spark jumps to GRD.
  12. I see your from Brisbane, I hope that all is well with you and yours. The car is only a car. Do what you will be least stressed about. Good luck.
  13. TG, you said it! I bought the BBC version, one of the best things on the screen since Ken Burns' Jazz et al.
  14. I would advise having the starter rewired for 12 v as well, as the impeller can slam into the ring gear damaging it. I agree on remaining original, but , it is easier to get 12v stuff of course. There is a company making alternators that look like original generators...I dare not ask the price.

    Mapco

I saw them on line but, I don''t think its the same evolution, since Mapco made electronic components. I wondered if they evolved into the auto parts retailer, kind of a Western Auto Parts.
  16. Does any one know any history of MAPCO. This company made voltage regulators and electrical components. The actual name of the company is(was) The Machined Automotive Parts Corporation, Detroit Michagan. Did a large conglamorate buy them out, or what? Couldn't find info on internet.

  18. Contacted Echlin ( division of Genuine Parts),and a few on line suppliers. I can not use a solid state with a positive ground, unless of course it is custom wired for that system. I need a original bi-metal regulator, that is not polarity sensitive. Input voltage is not important. 6volt will just react( open the points) a bit slower than 12v. Gauges react too slowly to notice movement. Any way that's what a few folks say.
  19. Thanks for all your input. Jim, that's what I thought about the resistor, but I am glad some one could explain it better than I could. I agree, RE. hoping an appropriate IVR shows up. Even the Hudson guys(HET) are silent on a modern match. Sounds like a potential market to me.
  20. Did you use the original -6v IVR in your 55 Ford after the conversion to 12volt?
  21. Thanks everyone, Does any one know if the ir4 sold by Napa is mechanical or solid state?
  22. Yea, it seems that the solid state idea bombs out when the main system is pos ground. Curious, though, if a mechanical IVR, made for 12 volt would handle a 6volt input and a 5volt output. ??? would the contacts be too starved for voltage to close and open consistantly.
  23. I have come to the belief that IVRs sold for 12 volt cars will work fine in a 6v car, but is there a problem with polarity? The 67-68 Ford IVR looks like a good fit, but how will a 12vneg IVR work with a 6vpos battery(IGN)? and, is there a problem with solid state vs mechanical IVRs with that combo? Albert, I read a thread from 2006 re, a guy with a 54 Packard. I have some good " build your own instructions" for a solid state but they are for specific cars with 12v neg.
  24. Thanks.I take it that the capacators need to be soldered somehow since I don't know what a LM 7905 looks like. Does this object create 5 volts to the gauges?
  25. There is a large beauitiful park in Brooklyn named after Mr Riis. With all the influence that Riis had with his association with TR, after Roosevelt left office and Taft took over, little was done except for the efforts of Mother Jones and Al Smith, and others. It took a horrific tragedy in 1911 to change forever building codes, When scores of young women(mostly immigrants) died in the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory fire in lower Manhattan. Look it up.
