  1. Did Ford ever use red/orange paint on the valve covers and air cleaner circa 64-65. Had a 64 Fairlane w/260 and the engine was blue. Was the 6 or 289 orange- red?

    Vapor lock

From the vapor lock capitol of the world, Arizona. For years I have struggled with this on my 6 volt 308 Hornet.unreliable over 90F especially after standing at a light.Instant fuel starvation. Winter gas flashes off at @105F, summer,145F.Neat ha? AS Joe P said wrap the line with insulation and you will gain some time, but eventually the line will heat up and stay hot longer, same for the mech fuel pump. Tried 3/8 line for more volume.Nyet. Diesel fuel added; more time, again NG. Neither did a fuel feedback line to the fuel filler neck. An elec pump in line works(solenoid style) but once the starvation occures it must remain on. And these pumps, IMO, are unreliable as the new gas causes the lining seals to swell and although the motor turns, they fail to pump and the mech pump can't draw enough fuel to maintain flow to the carbs. Only answer is to add one of two style pumps,a. rotory vein or a carator(gear driven) pump, and these are only 12 volt, but work well on 6v albeit half the PSI. Be advised these can not be added in line, as they will restrict the fuel to the mech pump. Therefore, adios to the mech pump. I prefer safety to originality, but, whatever.
  3. Another advantage of the Optima, you won't need to check the water level. That would require pulling up the floor mats and battery cover plate. I found the best place for prices on Optima is on Amazon.com. @ $125 & up.
  4. I,m sorry about your loss. See if you can get an appraisal from an independant registered collector car appraiser before any decision is made. Insurance companies make money by not paying on claims. Know what your car is worth. IN addition, criminal procedure laws vary from state to state. Dave, I'm a retired NY policeman. NY officers can not issue tickets for infractions, ie, traffic violations based on probable cause. They must witness the violation, however, on a accident report, they can give expert opinion on contributing factors.Other states give officers the leeway to cite the presumed violator ,if any, without actually seeing the violation. Some states police agencies are not issuing reports on property damage only, because the police(taxpayer funded) are becoming like claim adjusters for private companies. Best of luck, Lincoln, Follow up on the injury.Report it to your insurance co. Also consider collector car insurance with an agreed value. There are restrictions on vehicle use ,however.
  5. actually Hudson introduced the Jet in 53. It was the last new flathead from Hudson at 202cubes. It also powered the Italia and the Nash based Wasps until 1956 when AMC put 327s(ohv) into the remaining Hudson lineup for 1957. Amc as stated, used the 195 flat six until 1965, when the new for 65, 232 ohv replaced it for 1966. I didnot know that the power wagon still had the flat six. By that time the Army was getting the shipments of Kaiser 5/4s, so the old 3/4 ton vehicles were oldies from the 50s.
  6. Dave, I was thinking the same thing re. children. My dad sold his 48 Plymouth and bought a 52 Chevy 2ds. Kids love to play with buttons. Even if mom locked the door, the lock was fun to pull up& down, until on a slow turn to the left, the back right door flew open nearly depositing me on the curb. The door handles appeared to be a good place to grasp on sharp turns.Or not.
  7. He has been a popular builder a Model A engines for years. I know it's a way to go but As are his buisness.
  8. Ron Kelly engines in Royce City, Tx. 1454 Blackhand Rd Zip 75189. On line under that name. I believe near Dallas.
  9. My BFGs are 20 on my Hudson and appear great, Don't think I want to go over 55-60. I agree that most radials will fit, but the wider ones today won't. A friend had a Hornet with radials... a pleasure to drive, although more difficult to steer at very slow speed ,such as parking.
  10. Aside from deductions on judged cars, there are pros and cons to radials on OLD cars. The good:they ride, handle, steer, and stop better and are easier to purchase at any tire shop, if looks are not a concern, since the good driving characteristics are why one buys a radial. Now the Bad: someone said earlier when a radial fails the belts rip off causing whipping damage to the fender area, it happened to my friend on a Ferrari $9000 to fix. Production dates on radials is strictly a factor . In many countries radial tires are required to be replaced after 5-6 years due to possible fatigue. This is whether or not the tire is worn. Many bias tires can go over 10-12 years. Usually on our collector cars , bias tires dry rot or cracks become visable before the tire wears out. Radials are expensive and width is important, as some cars have tight fitting skirts. Stepdown Hudson,et al, as example. Stress on the rims should be a concern in extreme manuvers. And tubes may be a requirement. You call it.
  11. Try a 2 1/4" diameter O ring. Verify the thickness, as if the ring is too narrow the cap will leak ,or too thick it might not close. Have one on my A with a repo motor -meter. It's great! The repo meters came with a hard flat fiber washer that did not seal well. Good luck.
  12. Poci, I don't recall seeing modern style clamps on any cars that I have judged,1978 or older, that would not be a deduction. But, considering that few owners would carry documentation of the validity of hose clamps, at least not the first time they get judged, I was curious when they were invented or available to the public. This could make them period correct for some particular year. The judges handbook on page 24 does state as provided by manufactuer, which would override the" period correct defense".
  13. Can some one tell me when worm style hose clamps were first used? and, more importantly, when the AACA accepts them for judging?
  14. I have a Carter electric pump P60430, similar to the 60404,except the one on mine will put out 4-6psi. I checked the pressure out without a regulator. It was 7psi, too much for Carter Wa1, so I added a Spectre regulator, set it to 4 and that is what my pressure gauge read as well. I also added a flow check valve in the line as well. Try Summit auto parts, their prices are pretty low.
  15. Sorry, the pump is not adjustable.I mis read the column in Motors.
  16. British cars were 12v Positive until I believe 1968. With some exceptions, US cars were 6v Pos until WW2.In 1946, All GM cars went to 6vNEG except GMC. In 1953 Caddy and Olds went to 12vN, but Packard in 1955 was 12v Pos. and went to neg in 1956 with the rest of the US. VW stayed 6v neg until 1967.
  17. ON new cars always turn OFF the donor vehicle. If there is a power surge from one car to the other a computer module can blow. Since 1980 most cars are computer controlled. The donor car is usually the one running, since the reason for the boost is due to the weak battery in the receiver car. That is the only car you can remove the cable from safely.
  18. What's it worth. Hard to say, since if it was rebuilt in the past 7years or so,it could run a couple of hundred or more and it is show quality. If is is an older rebuild the new gas will play havoc with the old seals. Fortunately, there is no accelerator pump in a b&b to go nuts with the new gas. But will sell for less for that reason.
  19. You should have a C-7, the C-6 was a 1935.That would be an Airstream model. The engine was a 6 cyl 241.5 cu inch w/93hp. The carb was a Carter(BB)ball&ball style, part #E6G1. The straight 8 used Stombergs

  21. Try Metro Molded parts in Mn. or Steele Rubber , both online.
  22. Selling a 49 Cadillac starter solenoid that I bought with a bunch of parts for my 1950. It has been bench tested for continuity. I want only $8 + shipping of $11 to the lower 48 or anywhere for proper postage. Email rsotardi@yahoo.com or 5207498659 in Tucson AZ. Ron
  23. So, am I correct in saying, that if I add a gallon of diesel to every 10 of 87 octane gas, the fuel starvation on my twin -h hudson will be reduced or stopped when Az temps hit 100? 7.5-1 compression. And what about carbon buildup? A couple of years ago I tried a quart of diesel and noticed no differance. I presume I need more. Up to 88 degrees the car runs perfectly, then look out. The first stop light, and I head for the right lane.
