  3. Who is the person of contact? I just went on line and there are DOT conversion charts by many vendors . This is one https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/45_conversionchart.jsp . Radial tires are not as forgiving as the old bias tires, so care must be given to the proper conversion from the old nomenclatures. This is a guide for many of our members. I know that you are an innocent bystander. This statement is only for other members information. But for sure I will use the proper tire according to the DOT and safety regulations, not the ones required to win a trophy. My car was equipped with D/78R -14 tires and the correct conversion is P195/75R-14 . Foreign cars used the non-P style. These may work but are incorrect for my light load. IMO the old judges guide should take precedent, that is, radials after 1976 are ok on all US cars. Simple as that. Stay well, Ron
  4. Well, I attended the Western National Meet in Palm Springs this March. I am a Life Member. My car is a 1978 AMC Concord D/L coupe with a 232Ci and a 4 speed and factory A/C. It is a very rare model as equipped It is as close to a 400 point car as one could expect. The only gig that I expected was for the Craig am/fm 8 track Dealer Installed stereo. AMC never offered a AMC "brand" am/fm 8 track: only a am 8 track or am/ fm radio. So dealers made a few extra bucks contracting vendors to accommodate buyers desires. I was surprised when the team captain advised me that P/70 series tires were not offered until 1979 (78-79 same class 27M). I say surprised, but not so sore that I was ready to kick dirt on the "umpire". But, I probably won't enter the car again in point judging. AMC offered DR78/14 as a added option to the bias tires. The present conversion is P195R78/14 and they are the only style that is close ( or exact) to original. That is what I plan to buy, because as previously stated radial tires can be unsafe after 7-8 years. Discount Tire will not even repair a radial past 7 years. Let's be frank, AMC are lovers' cars, and don't bring in big bucks. I can't even imagine that anyone would produce a custom tire( no P) for 70s economy cars. Cost vs. return on investment is why we don't see many at AACA Meets. So I intend to drive the Concord, and only show it locally, when convenient. I think that is a shame and an injustice that cars such as Gremlins Pintos Corvairs and so many economy cars are at such an disadvantage. After all they were most of the cars that many folks actually drove. But that's the Umps call.
  5. IMO... the issue with the economy is not so much the people 75 years old as it is with the people of 35 years old. Demographics have changed. No longer are the working class able to be involved with the "hobby". Folks who entered the "job market " in about 1950 - 1965 stayed as employees with a company for long periods of time, in most cases until retirement. So those folks remained residents in the same general location for decades. Not so today. Employees, whether professional or technical, may be required to move to far away residences, maybe even in another nation, to obtain employment or promotions. Later boomers, gen X , Y or millennials , need to be more like bedouins for work opportunities. They don't buy residences that can accommodate old cars, nor wish to have to sell 'em when it is time to move on. Old cars are an anchor. There is also a slow migration to the cities for many reasons. There are other reasons young folks(buyers) are not entering the hobby, but let's save that for another site. Some older folks want to down size collections for reasons... health being a large one, and the buyers are not there. They were never born to make up for the Baby Boomers. That is a Real problem in Europe. It is a serious problem for present owners from a financial point. But, as a hobbyist, I am less interested in profit than enjoying my pleasures. I too, just parted with a car for way less then I thought it was worth. But, I am happy it went to a good home, as I owned it for over 21 years. If our cars become an investment, then we also must realize that not all investments make money. Enjoy the ride!

    Electric Fuel Pump

    Fuel pumps come in different operation styles. There are solenoid, carotor( gear driven), and rotary vane. I will assume the 48 Buick still has a 6 volt electrical system. So that eliminates the gear driven carator, since I am not aware of any manufacturer of any 6volt model. What type do you have ? The solenoid type look like a small fuel filter in brass. Carter, AC, and Airtex are the most popular makers. Then there is the trusty Rotary Vane usually by Carter. Go to the Carter electric fuel pump website. The RV has on intake port and an outtake port . Many owners put a bypass in line. Reason: mechanical pumps(original) flatly can not pull gas through Carotor pump... the electric pump must be running all the time. The rotary vane is way better, but like a Wankel engine the electric pump motor can stop in a blocked position and interrupt the suction of the Mech pump. Solenoid pumps are Free Flow and therefore the best for priming or delaying fuel starvation( pre vapor lock). Many reasons for the mech pump to require a "booster" : Worn parts in the pump , check valves or a worn cam lobe, are just a few. Gas cap must be a vented style. Pressure and suction tests will help locate the problem. I would temporarily remove the electric pump and see why the mech pump does not run the engine.

After this harrowing experience, I now know why feedbacks on Ebay are pure BS.   16. The interior is new but with original material and stitched duplicating original. It can't be distinguished from original. At the Cadillac Meet in Anaheim, the CLC Team Captain inquired about that as well. No deductions on interior, total 97 points on 100 point max judging standard. If you ever observed CLC judging, you will see that EVERY component it checked , as well as engine operation for smoke, noisy lifters, idle, accelerator pump, etc.
