Sorry about drifting from the OP's question, but I need to chime in...There are a couple of car donation "charities" operating near me in New Jersey and it amazes me that they don't seem to be scrutinized in any way. One of them operates their own used car lot stocked with freebie inventory. They get lots of donations because they give an artificially high value for the car so people get a larger tax write-off. Another well-known car charity near here makes all or nearly all of their donations to a particular religious school. The owner of the charity also happens to own the school!

The original engine number is stamped on the side of the chassis near the left rear wheel. You probably have to clean away rust and undercoating to see it.

It my have been mentioned before, but GM keys have letter designations to identify the keyway (the grooves in the side of the key). So if your ignition key is an 'A' blank (for example) you should be able to use a newer style (big rectangular head) 'A' blank and cut a key. The automakers were notorious for having very few key combinations. In the 1960's, my mother, aunt, and cousin went to a bingo game in my aunt's '55 Buick. When they left, they got into another '55 Buick and drove away in it. My cousin spotted my aunt's car still parked at the curb! My aunt put the other car back where it was, and no-one was any the wiser.

Great old accessory item. At least 50 years old since the manufacturer's address has a 'zone number' instead of a 'zip code'. Switch plate is marked 'No. 1', 'No. 2', and 'Both'. A couple of events that showcased poor production quality... My cousin sold Dodges and got the first new Demon his dealership received as a demo. One fender said 'Demon' the other said 'Duster'. A friend bought a new '74 Corvette. He brought it to my house before even going home with it so I could see what a mess it was. I took it for a spin (brand new with under 25 miles on it) and the car had lots of issues. After several trips to the service department, the dealer informed him that they didn't build the car and were not going to do any more work to it. He dumped it soon thereafter and got a Datsun 280Z. The fifties had their share of quality issues as well. My father was a NYC cab driver and the company test driver when new cabs came in. One DeSoto lost a wheel on Columbus Circle, and another caught fire because of a wiring issue.

I had an '89 Buick Century with a 3.3 V-6 that would periodically stumble and then set the check-engine light. Couldn't find the cause. I checked everything I could think of, and then sent it in to the shop at the Pep Boys I was working at. Their top tech (former NASCAR guy...very good diagnostician) spent 2 hours and didn't find the problem. It was a dark damp afternoon, and on the way home from Pep Boys the car acted-up again. I opened the hood in exasperation, and found the problem: One of the spark plug wire boots had a split on the coli-pack end, allowing the spark to jump to ground. The combination of dim daylight and damp weather made it easy to see the arcing.
