There is no factory documentation on these cars. Other than determining if it was an eight or six cylinder, not much else can be done. There are certain items that pertain just to the 348, but most restorers know this. Steve mentioned the the VCCA in his post. The VCCA (Vintage Chevrolet Club of America) offers all of our members access to the tech advisors who help members with questions of authenticty. I think it would be well worth a membership for the help, let alone a great monthly magazine! But we do not authenticate cars. I am one of the tech advisors just so happens to be for the 348 engines. I checked the link, and sorry to say there were no four speeds installed in the 1958 passenger cars. There is not one part in any Chevy parts books listing any application for a four speed passenger car in 1958, NONE. He also forgot to mention in his auction that Chevrolet did not offer fender skirts in 1958. I have found in this hobby if people lie about the car enough they think it will become true. There is also a story that the four speed could have been dealer installed, also no paperwork as far as a TSB has never surfaced.

Did anyone go to Allentown?
I went to the Big E on Saturday and was let down. There were less car part vendors (not that there were a lot last year) even less tool vendors. There was too much junk, tee-shirts, belts, even someone selling replacement storm windows. I think I might pass on the Big E next year and head to Allentown.

How many vendors? Is it parts or cell phones, foriegn tools, T-shirts and belt buckles?

Roger,
I was thinking the same thing. I am looking at an unbuilt Hudson kit of a 1910 International. I will try to bring it to the VCR Meeting if the weather permits on Wednesday

I think it is one of the best publications I subscribe to. Articles written by hobbiest, one of the last few publications that is still dedicated to restoration. Even Cars and Parts has sold out and is starting to cater to modifications. You will enjoy it, Skinned Knuckles, I know I can't put mine down when it comes.

I was going to give the same reply as Stock Steve, I have always gone to the Big E. Friends who have done both say the Big E was better but not by much. I would not drive far to either in bad weather.
If you find what you are looking for then it is the best swap meet you ever went to. I went to one of the first Big E events, in the snow maybe 25 years ago and found some great stuff, so I still have that thought in the back of my mind. I meet some of my friends from the CT Vintage Chevrolet Club and we make it a day, or
Something to do in the winter

Thanks for the help, but not needed. FYI the good seat covers will be about $3,500, I am looking for cheap, something that the dog can sit on and not be a problem

Richard,
I had gone that route with my 62 Biscayne and it was some big bucks! This car is just knock around driver, and this price was right. I can order a kit from Hampton for the 31 but again I am spending more then the car is worth. Looks like we will sit on towels for a while longer

They called me back today and told me that they did not have the pattern for my car, oh well hope you have better luck

I think we will find out!

I am glad you asked the question, I never would have thought that Kanters offered seat cover kits. I am going to call Dan in the morning I need something for my driver 31 Chevy that is fairly cheap

My friend said it was Juniors, he was picking at the white 60 Buick ragtop in one of the photos.

I found and purchased a NYC porcelan street sign from a street around the corner from where my grandparents lived in The Bronx. Pelham Parkway and Tomlinson Ave, they lived on Pelham Parkway and Hone Ave.... what are the odds of that with all of the streets in New York City! and how many could be left

Hello All,
First time here (posting anyway) My best friend was at this yard last year. I just called him up to review the photos to confirm if this was the place he spoke about and it was. Pretty much everything was in real bad shape. He warned that the trail going in was loaded with debris so have a few extra tires on hand.
I had just read of a yard in OCW that is closing two weeks ago. We have been going to that one for 20 years and it was run by some of the oddest(nice but odd)people I have ever met. The last time I was there was about 10 years ago everything was in pretty bad shape then, time and the weather had taken it's toll.

I had a similar problem, What I did was fill in all of the pits to build a smooth core for casting. I did have it done in stainless and it was a waste of money, I was not happy with the results at all! I was told after that I should have had it done in aluminum and polish out the finished product. I have yet to do it again. I sent you a PM with some details.

From what you discribe those are known as cowl tags, not a vin tag that is different

My friend came down from Maine this past weekend to check out what was left at Curboys, sad to report it is pretty much gone! We met at Springfield at the Big E swap meet on Saturday (1.20.07) and he said that the crusher was going full speed ahead, trying to beat the snow cover for the winter.

I am pretty sure it was a 59 Ford

Well I got a report from a good friend of mine today, who visited the yard yesterday 1.19.07 and he said it was pretty much gone! He traveled down form Maine, and we got together at the "Big E" Sawp Meet. The crusher was going at full speed and the "Air Strip" was removed of all of those vehicles in the photo.

Chevy Dome lights are tricky because the ground is the switched conductor.

I have used it in my 60 Impala for almost 15 years with no problem. I would not use anything else. But I would only do it with everything new. It does not remove your paint with a mistake!
Good luck

I never knew that Dyno Don was known for racing Fords, I always knew him for his 409 Bel Air's. About 12 years ago he was running on the Super Chevy magazine circut with a recreation of his white 62 Chevy Bel Air.

I just had a set of hood hinges done in zinc process that simulates gold cad, by a fellow in Galena IL. I was very happy with his work and turn around time. He also does hardware. His price list states $95 for the first 15 lbs and $6 a lb after that. His e-mail is classy58@yousq.net
Good luck

Radio volume controls in the steering wheel, but yet for some reason the salesman said I needed them?

Can a Chevy guy be happy with a Model A
in General Discussion
Posted
Growing up my father had Model A's, even in the late 60's and early 70's parts were easy to get. As the owner of a 31 Chevy I do have to say that I think that the Chevy is an overall better made car, however with that said when something breaks you have to search for parts. The wood in the Chevy is the biggest problem. They are also known to snap axles. The original carbs are problematic, and are very expensive to fix and find in working order. I do think that cost wise you can purchase a Chevy for less than a Model A. There is something to be said when parts are easy to get. If I had to do it again, I would still have that six cylinder in my gararge.
Again this is just my opinion, I am not looking for a full blown argument
